The taiko has played an invaluable role in the life and culture of the
Japanese people for thousands of years. In ancient times, the taiko was
sounded to determine village boundaries and to send messages such as
signaling the time. Its deep, thunderous reverberations also made it the
perfect instrument to communicate with the Shinto gods during festival
time to pray for rain and a bountiful harvest as well as to scare away
evil spirits harmful to the crops. To learn more...
Festival Finale
with Doc Watson the Legendary NC-born guitarist and singer and his
grandson Richard Watson as Hills Of Home on Sunday at 3:30pm at the
Mainstage. 7-time Grammy winner Doc Watson joins Grammy-winning
folk guitarist and claw hammer banjoist David Holt for a musical jamboree
of the finest folk music. Watson's mountain roots seamlessly blend with
bluegrass, country, gospel and blues, and he possesses a mastery of
instrument and voice that strikes awe in the listener.
