1. Educate yourself about
what you're bringing into your home. For more information, check out the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services Household Products Database.
2. Out with the old... Once you know what's healthy from your home and your
environment, it's time to get rid of the harmful stuff. You'll want to be
careful with cleaning agents containing harmful chemicals and compounds,
though... your local waste collection service should be able to advise you on
how to properly dispose of these hazardous wastes from abrasive cleaning agents
to batteries, paint, and other household chemicals.
3. ... And in with the Shaklee. Before bringing an item into your home,
consider the impact it will have on you, your family, your home, and your
planet. A good rule of thumb is to keep your home environment as natural as
possible-- this will also help keep your house- and the people in it- safe and
healthy. Keep fresh air abundant by opening windows, using indoor plants, and
freshening with essential oils instead of chemical-containing air fresheners.
Use organic, recycled, and renewable home furnishings, furniture, and other house
wares whenever possible. And, of course, when cleaning your home look for
Shaklee products- they're all natural, non-toxic, biodegradable, and
hypo-allergenic -- and they're even concentrated so they'll save you money and
last longer.
4. Save your energy bill - and the planet! Saving energy won't just impact you
and your family but the whole planet. If everyone did all they could in their
home to save energy, the changes would really add up. Unplug appliances when
they're not in use to prevent use of "phantom energy," and turn off
lights when you're not in a room. Save water by using low-flush toilets,
low-flow toilets, and a tank-less water heater in your home.

Shaklee and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals
|
The United Nations
Millennium Development Goals encompass a variety of issues that will seek to
significantly aid the world's poorest by the year 2015. Some target issues will
include ending poverty and hunger, universal education, gender equality,
maternal and child health, and combating HIV/AIDS. Shaklee has partnered with
Dr. Jeffrey Sachs of the Earth Institute at Columbia University to help people
worldwide better their lives and help to offset some of the many problems
poverty creates.
Here's an example of how Shaklee is working toward meeting the UN Millennium
Development Goals: In addition to offsetting 100 percent of gas emissions at
Shaklee headquarters through 2009, Shaklee has also installed solar-powered LED
lanterns in remote villages in Kenya, replacing their former kerosene wick lamps.
Not only are these new lanterns a much more sustainable form of energy for the
villagers, but they're also increasing productivity, expanding the amount of
hours that can be used for education each day, and increasing the villagers'
earnings potential, all while preventing greenhouse gas emissions.

What are Prebiotics and Probiotics?
|
Prebiotics are non-digestible food fibers that stimulate the growth of
certain bacteria in the intestines. Once they're ingested in food, prebiotics
must survive the journey through the upper gastrointestinal tract so they can
arrive in the lower tract, where they're used by the colon's beneficial
microorganisms.
Unlike probiotics, prebiotics are not destroyed when cooked.
Probiotics are tiny organisms that help maintain the natural balance of
organisms in the intestines. The typical digestive tract contains about 400
probiotics that help reduce the amount of harmful bacteria while promoting a
healthy digestive system. The best known probiotic is the Lactobacillus
acidophilus, found in yogurt, along with yeast. Because they aid with stomach
and intestinal diseases, probiotics are also commonly found in supplements.
