Organic Mechanic: Oxymoron? We Think Not!
On
our new website we prove that these two words can go together – and is
the practical application of who we are and our commitment to find the
best possible solutions to limiting the negative environmental impact
of automobile maintenance and operation. Organic or environmentally
friendly techniques and products can be implemented in every aspect of
our lives. It just takes a bit of thought and a few extra steps.
Click here to read about and see the plans for our new location and garage.
We are constantly researching and adding new products and methods to
the everyday service we provide. From recycling paper, plastic, metals
and oil – and using as many products made from recycled materials to
our commitment to supporting community businesses and providing a
living wage and health care to our family of employees – we are proving
that being an organic mechanic is possible!

Travel Green?
Travel is a reality for a great number of people – from work to
gathering essentials for living to a welcome departure from the routine
of our busy lives – to get from here to there and back usually requires
motorized transportation of some kind. The new challenge is to choose
the most fuel/energy efficient transportation methods.
Here are a few suggestions:
Enjoy Local – Really Local Destinations
— explore the ways in your area that you can drive fewer miles (or none
at all) by biking, walking, using public transportation or if you must
use a car, share the ride to enjoy local entertainment, meals, and
sports. Choose to rent movies and cook a meal at home on a Saturday
night, instead of driving across town to a movie theater and
restaurant. Or choose an eatery in your neighborhood that you can bike
or walk to. On average a gasoline burning car creates and emits 20
pounds of carbon dioxide per mile driven. Using the average mileage
driven in a year, one car adds six to nine tons of CO2 to the
atmosphere – so every mile you can eliminate for work or pleasure
reduces CO2 and other harmful byproducts of emissions into the
environment.
Take Advantage of Telecommuting — State of the art
innovations in digital communications and internet technologies makes
it possible to limit unnecessary long distance travel for meetings or
shorter distances to travel to a physical work location everyday. More
and more people are opting to use web conferencing and secure internet
based company applications that allow workers to access everything they
need to efficiently accomplish tasks from the comfort of their own home
or neighborhood coffee shop. Using the estimates from the previous
paragraph, this means that if a person worked from home one day per
week – keeping their car idle for that day, saving on average 25 miles
for that day, they would eliminate a little over a two-tons of
pollution per year. If more people can do the same thing, think what a
positive impact that would have to the air, water, and human health.
And don’t forget that’s a few extra gallons of fuel and money saved as
well.

Do Cats Purr On Purpose?
Cats communicate with us in various ways. Anyone that has or does share
time with a cat knows they have their own way of reacting in any given
situation. They are quick to gain our attention if they feel they need
something – a scratch behind the ear, reminder that the food bowl is
empty, or simply a desire for a warm lap to rest in are just a few of
the reasons. They are also just as quick to ambush us from around a
corner or behind a piece of furniture just for the fun of it! One of
the signs that your cat is happy is that familiar purring sound they
make. Some cats have a quiet melodic purr and others resemble the sound
of a small but powerful lawn mower!
Physically cats are able to produce these sounds by using their
diaphragm to push air back and forth across nerves in the larynx that
vibrate. But why they purr still remains a bit of a mystery because
cats are also known to purr when they are in pain or afraid. Some
animal researchers believe there is a curative property to the
vibrations to other organs and systems of the cat’s body. Mother cats
sometimes purr during labor and delivery and others purr as they are
recovering from physical injury or sickness.
Why they purr – or if they purr on purpose my never be truly known.
That’s why people either love them or don’t – there are as many cat
personalities as cats…kind of like people!

Recipe of the Month: Leek and Mushrooom Bisque
Brothy vegan soups aren’t that tricky to make, but thick and creamy
ones require a few tricks. I love this recipe because the thickening
magic comes in the form of Cream of Wheat! It’s a lovely soup that
takes its cues from the season with flavorful leeks and earthy
mushrooms. The recipe is found in Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons (Broadway Books, 2009) by vegan cookbook author Nava Atlas.
3 large leeks, white and palest green parts only
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 cups water with 2 vegetable bouillion cubes (or homemade vegetable stock)
One 16-ounce can pureed tomatoes
1/2 cup Cream of Wheat (or generic farina)
12 ounces mushrooms, coarsely chopped
2 teaspoons salt-free seasoning (or mix of favorite herbs)
1 1/2 to 2 cups rice milk, or as needed
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1. Cut the white and place green parts of the leeks in half lengthwise, then into 1/4-inch slices. Rinse well to remove all grit.
2. Heat the oil in a soup pot. Add the leeks and saute
over medium heat until limp. Add the water with bouillion cubes and the
pureed tomatoes. Bring to a rapid simmer, then lower the heat until the
liquid is at a very gentle simmer. Slowly sprinkle in the farina,
whisking it as you do.
3. Add the mushrooms and the seasoning. Cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes.
4. Stir in enough rice milk to give the soup a
slightly thick consistency, then season with salt and pepper. Simmer
for another 5 minutes.
5. Remove from the heat and let the soup stand off teh heat for at
least an hour. Heat through, then adjust the consistency with more rice
milk if necessary before serving. Adjust the seasoning, then serve.
