FATAL CRASH AT HYANNIS
A
deHaviland Twin Otter crashed on takeoff at 10:03 this morning from
ruwnay 24 at Barnstable Municipal Airport. Eyewitnesses reported the
aircraft lifted off to about 200 feet then rolled inverted and stalled
into the ground. Pictures show the tailcone of the aircraft dangling.
While initial speculation was that the cargo-carrying aircraft was
heavily loaded, the 3000 pound useful load aircraft was allegedly
carrying only 200 pounds of cargo. Killed was pilot Mark Conway of
Marston's Mills, who leaves his wife and two children.
The FAA, NTSB, and Mass. Aeronautics Commission are investigating the cause.
The accident aircraft was an old Twin Otter, serial number 47, and
is registered to Piper East, Inc. of Manchester, New Hampshire. It
received it's original airworthiness certificate 41 years ago last
Saturday on June 14, 1967.
Hyannis Airport manager Quincy "Doc" Mosby held a press conference which you may view by clicking the link below.

MAJOR SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS THIS WEDNESDAY
Thanks
to the generosity of CAPA members we will be awarding six scholarships
this year, four $1,000 and two $2,000 scholarships. This is triple the
number of scholarships awarded last year. It became possible because we
raised double the contributions to the fund from kind CAPA members.
Sincere thanks to Cape Air who contributed $1,500.
Our very special annual scholarship award meeting will be this
coming Wednesday, June 25th! We have invited Cape Air President Dan
Wolf to present the awards, and to be our program speaker. Many long
time members consider Dan to be one of the best speakers we have all
year, so you do not want to miss this meeting.
This year we are awarding six aviation scholarships to a very
bright lineup of candidates, including our first ever primary flight
training scholarship. We have asked all our young scholarship winners
to speak a few words about what got them interested in aviation, what
they love about it, and where they hope to go. All will be attending
except previous winner Melissa Rego, who is taking final exams the day
of and day after the meeting.
Thanks to previous Scholarship Chairman Ron Tracy for his work in
recruiting the applicants. Due to personal issues, Ron stepped down,
but was replaced by CAPA Director Gary Street, Falmouth Airpark
resident and member of the FAA Safety Team. Gary initially served as a
judge in the selection process and was so emotionally moved by the
sincerity, desire, and quality of the applicants that he offered to
take over the position.
Come meet the bright young aviators of tomorrow this Wednesday night at CAPA.

NEW CAPA MEETING INFO
The good news - Cape Cod Community College ("CCCC") received a state grant for Science Building remodeling.
The bad news - they are remodeling the lecture halls, so the CAPA meeting will move.
The Wednesday, June 25 meeting will be in Room 111 in the South
Building. Better news, the meeting room is air conditioned! Use parking
lots 4 & 5.
Meeting starts at 6 PM with socialization and complimentary
Scottie's Famous Airport Pizza...business meeting gets underway at
6:30.
Just off the Mid-Cape Highway, the main campus (West Barnstable) is north of Exit 6 (the junction of Routes 6 and 132).
The CAPA meeting in July will be replaced by the CAPA/EAA Cookout
(see below). Starting in August, we are moving our monthly meetings to
a new date, the first Tuesday of every month. This change was voted on
and approved at the February CAPA meeting and is being done to make it
easier for people to remember the meeting dates, and make it easier for
many people who said they have commitments later in the week to attend.

KATAMA OPENS FOR DINNER
Starting
Friday, June 20th, Mel's Diner at Katama Airfield will be open for
dinner. Dinner should be a much easier and enjoyable experience than
weekend lunches, which on a VFR day can mean a two hour wait for a
table followed by a two hour wait for a hamburger. Katama is a very
popular spot for touristas on the weekend.
Weather at Katama can be tricky, since late afternoon or evening
fog banks frequently drift in from the South beach, making South
departures VFR impossible. This can happen on the nicest sunny VFR day.
Stay alert.
