Lucky Dube Murder Suspect Denied Bail

Ludwe Gxowa, the man suspected of murdering reggae star Lucky Dube, was denied bail when he appeared with six others in the Balfour magistrate's court on Thursday on theft charges, police said.

The men were charged with stealing copper cable valued at R150 000 from an Eskom power station near Grootvlei, Balfour, in September last year, said Captain Leonard Hlathi.

While his six co-accused are out on bail for the robbery, Gxowa has been kept in custody. Gxowa was out on bail when he allegedly assisted in the murder of Dube, said Hlathi.

The case was postponed until March 20.

'08 OPENING NIGHT GALA
PAFF has announced that award-winning filmmaker Charles Burnett's NAMIBIA: THE STRUGGLE FOR LIBERATION will open its 16th annual festival on Thursday, February 7, 2008 in Hollywood at the Directors Guild of America.

Starring Carl Lumbly, Danny Glover, Joel Haikali, and Obed Emvula, NAMIBIA depicts the long struggle waged by the people of Namibia for their independence that was ultimately won with the help of Cuban military volunteers fighting in Angola. The 1987 battle of Cuito Cuanavale, in which the South African army was decisively defeated, turned the tide in the liberation struggle for all of Southern Africa. This was one of the key factors that led to Namibian Independence and the election of Sam Nujoma as Namibia's first President and forced the white supremacist South African government to free President Nelson Mandela and to negotiate with the African National Congress.

Radio veteran Lee Bailey of Eurweb.com will again host the red carpet and entertainment provided by Malcolm Jamal Warner's Miles Long.

'08 CELEBRITY HOST

Award-winning, critically acclaimed actor ISAIAH WASHINGTON ("Get on the Bus," "Grey's Anatomy") has been chosen as PAFFs 2008 Celebrity Host. WASHINGTON, who most recently starred in NBCs "Bionic Woman," was the 2005 recipient of PAFFs Canada Lee Award. It was then that Washington, who is African-American, discovered through a DNA test designed to trace his African ancestry that he is likely of Mende descent from Sierra Leone. In December 2006, he visited his ancestral homeland and received a warm welcome from the local people. Since then, Washington has built the Chief Golia Foday Memorial School in the rural village of Njala Kendema through his non-profit organization the Gondobay Manga Foundation and continues to advocate cooperative planning to achieve positive timely improvements in the lives of the people of Sierra Leone. www.gondobaymangafoundation.org.

Thousands Of Original Music Recordings Missing From Jamaican Archives

A massive collection of 1970s music including original recordings by reggae greats Bob Marley and Peter Tosh has disappeared from the archives of the former Jamaica Broadcasting Corp., authorities said.

The possible theft of thousands of vinyl records and compact discs is a blow to the island's history, said Olivia Grange, Jamaica's information minister.

Musicians and former JBC employees criticized the government for not properly maintaining the archives.

Workers at the newly formed Public Broadcasting Corp. of Jamaica noticed the disappearances while touring the old JBC building. They had planned to use the archived material for their first programs, Grange said.

The archives also contain such iconic videos as the 1977 visit of Fidel Castro and the 1978 One Love Peace Concert,' in which Marley famously called two bitter Jamaican political rivals onstage to join hands.

Monty Alexander To Postpone Appearance on Rebel Salute

(pictured: Monty Alexander)

FROM THE DESK OF MONTY ALEXANDER
New York, January 8, 2008

Dear Friends,
I have been looking forward to playing at Rebel Salute 2008 since this past May when Tony personally invited me to participate to the event.

In these last few days however, I have been experiencing a profound sense of personal loss with the passing of the great pianist Oscar Peterson, who died at 82 on December 24 in Toronto, Canada. For the last five decades, Dr. Oscar Peterson was the giant and master of piano artistry in the world of Jazz, and he was my good friend. He had been one of my strongest supporters since I first met him in the 1960's. Oscar Peterson set the greatest example for excellence in Jazz not only for every pianist but also for all instruments-he played with power, force and passion. No other true Jazz artist had such an illustrious career.

I feel compelled to respond to his family's request that I perform at a special memorial concert in his honor. The concert is on January l2 in Toronto, the very same day as Rebel Salute. This brought me considerable conflict and internal struggle because I had made a promise to my brother, Tony Rebel. I have spoken to Tony of my dilemma and I am grateful that he understood my situation- that I must be in Toronto on January 12. I do hope that those who care for my musical efforts will also understand my difficult decision.

Please acquaint yourself with the legacy of the Majestic Giant of music: Dr. Oscar Emmanuel Petersono II I: www.oscarpeterson.com

Sincerely,
Monty Alexander
