CHEF MAYRA'S ZUCCHINI WALNUT BREAD
Chef Mayra aka Dr Flavor
702 372 4709
www.mychefmayra.com

Zucchini is one of the most common summer vegetables, but, unfortunately, I’m not that fond of it. Zucchini bread is a whole different story, though.

3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
3/4 cup unbleached white flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. sea salt
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 cup light walnut oil or safflower oil
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup plain soy milk
1/4 cup apple juice
1 cup grated zucchini
1/2 cup walnuts, toasted and chopped

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Oil a standard loaf pan. Set aside one tablespoon of grated zucchini for garnishing the top.
Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.
Whisk wet ingredients in a medium bowl and add to dry.
Stir just enough to incorporate all ingredients, then srit in zucchini and nuts.Transfer mixture to loaf pan and distribute remaining zucchini over the surface. Bake until golden, about 45 minutes.
Allow loaf to cool in pan for about ten minutes, then turn out and let cool on a wire rack.

Lemon Maple Glaze
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 Tbsps. lemon juice
Bring glaze ingredients to a boil in a small saucepan, then turn heat down and simmer for about five minutes. Brush surface of bread with glaze.

GYPTIAN SET TO RELEASE HIGHLY ANTICPATED SECOND ALBUM
On Tuesday, October 21, 2008, Gyptian unveils his long-awaited sophomore release I Can Feel Your Pain on VP Records.  Evolving into a world class singer, Gyptian masters his timbre with his distinguished falsetto and innate ability to connect with his listeners, hence the reason for his album title. From newcomers Imran Fire Peter Passard, John "FX" Crawford, Livity Movements and Ray Stephens to fellow production partner Kemar Flavor McGregor, this carefully constructed narrative meshes live one drop roots instrumentals and contemporary digital production with inflections of reggae, R&B, pop and rock. With his real life depictions of ghetto hardships and love, Gyptian will strike a chord with his listeners on this 14 track collection.  He opens with bittersweet laments, Keep Your Calm (Kemar "Flava" Mcgregor) then Nobody No Cry (Ray Stephen for Vertex Productions), painting a portrait of Jamaica¹s devastatingly violent and corrupted landscape blended with rays of hope and resolution. His love songs are just as thought-provoking and sensitive. With charisma and grace, Gyptian's voice floats effortlessly over the whimsical R&B tinged roots single Wheres My Baby (Livity Movements) and the title track produced by  Imran "Fire Peter" Passard and FX Music, which is currently riding the reggae charts. Other standout tracks include the hypnotic one drop smoker's anthem Sensi (Ray Stephens) and the melody driven tribute Thanks and Praise (Imran "Fire Peter" Passard).

REMEMBERING CHERRY
She was born Ermine Ortense Bramwell in Jamaica in August 1943. She died Sept. 24 as Ermine Dempsey-Barker in Palm Beach Gardens. But really, she was known as Cherry. Cherry Green. Sometimes Cherry Smith. Cherry was one of the original members of Bob Marley and the Wailers.

"She was one of the backup singers who helped them create their signature sound," said Christopher John Farley, author of Before the Legend: The Rise of Bob Marley.

"Everyone knew her as Cherry because she was red," recalled "Sir Henry" Eccleston, a disc jockey at WBAI in New York City, who grew up with Cherry in TrenchTown, Jamaica. It was a name by which even her mother called her.

As a girl, Cherry was singing, and so were many of her friends.
By the time she was a teenager, she was hanging with Marley and future band members Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh and Junior Braithwaite, as well as another backup singer, Beverly Kelso.

Everyone called her Cherry Green. After all, she told The Beat magazine founding editor Roger Steffens, her brother's last name was Green, so they figured hers was, too.

"In the beginning, they were just teenagers trying to earn enough money to buy some cocoa," said author Farley.

By 1967, Cherry had a baby girl, and playing for a little change or a new dress, as she once recalled, wasn't enough, she told The Beat. She left the group. Farley estimates she made 10 or 11 recordings, including originals of Simmer Down, Maga Dog, I Need Your Love and Lonesome Feeling. The originals are becoming easier to find as bootlegged albums make their way into the mainstream, Farley said.

Cherry left Jamaica in 1969 and hit Miami, New York and Southern California. She was a mom and nurse before retiring to West Palm Beach, Barker said. Cherry caught Marley only once in concert after she left: in 1976 at the Santa Monica Civic Center. There, despite an invitation to go backstage, someone turned her away, she told a reporter. Marley found out later, she recalled. "When Bob look at me, he said, 'Look at sister Cherry!' ... He was surprised, and he come and he hug me."

Thomas Barker gets teary-eyed remembering these stories. "I still miss her," he said. Farley, the Marley chronicler, will miss her, too.

"If the Wailers hadn't recorded Simmer Down, a lot of bands from the Police to No Doubt wouldn't have been what they are," he said.

Besides her husband, Ms. Dempsey-Barker is survived by a daughter, Audrey Hinton; a brother, Carlton Green; and a granddaughter.

REMEMBERING ALTON
Rocksteady star and reggae pioneer Alton Ellis passed away in London on Friday. He was 70 years-old. Ellis had been in the care of Hammersmith hospital in the weeks leading up to his death, although his family wished for the details to remain quiet, respectfully.

Ellis first enjoyed breakout success in his homeland of Jamaica in the late '50s and early '60s, during the country's ska phase (which, soon after, gave rise to Bob Marley and the Wailers). However, Ellis found his true calling with reggae's rocksteady movement, arguably even inventing the subgenre with his hit, 'Get Ready -- Rock Steady.'

Ellis relocated to England in 1973 and it was in England where he formed his Alltone label, and where he continued to record, produce and even repackage.

While many young reggae fans may not know Ellis as a legend, certainly the reggae world will forever remember him as the "Godfather of Rocksteady."

MOESE ANGEL MOURNED BY NORTHERN CALIFORNIA REGGAE COMMUNITY
(Moese bio taken from his myspace page)

You wouldn't guess from his heavy DJ style that this California native wasn't straight out of Jamaica. Moese Angel, however was born to a Jamaican mother and French father in London. This musician hailed from a musical legacy which included his uncle, Junior Marvin and his sister, rising songstress Luna Angel. His many impressive talents extended way beyond his musical abilities, which included percussion and his fascination with the bass sparked by the first one he received from his famous uncle.

Since childhood, Moese was surrounded by music; he was fortunate enough to see Bob Marley perform as an infant. He spent many of his developing years studying and later teaching juggling, stilt walking, and unicycling at a notable performing arts Summer Camp in Northern CA. It was there in the rural mountains of Mendocino that he began to discover and nurture his own musical gifts. In his teens, he began to study the djembe drum with master Senegalese teachers, and he later went on to perform as part of an elaborate dance ensemble all throughout California.

Moeses' style was a true representation of his wide variety of diverse influences. His own unique blend resonated with more than reggae fans in California and throughout the world. He chanted tunes about Rastafarian consciousness and the reality of challenging times. His music incoporated deep occasional harmonies above innovative and edgy ragga-style lyrics over dancehall heavy tracks.

His off-stage reserved demeanor was a far cry from his lively on-stage persona. He performed as part of the Luna Angel band providing a dancehall flavor to the powerful showcase. He had the opportunity to express his talents opening for such artsts as Bounty Killer, Buju Banton, Toots and The Maytals, and Alpha Blondy. His chants were also heard on several Bay Area mix tapes released by the sound system, Jah Warrior Shelter.

Moese demonstrated his producing and engineering skills on (his sister) Luna's debut album "Move with Me." Moese dedicated himself to procuring his unique craft and developing his debut album. He proved that he had a genuine foundation and authentic talent which made him one of the most promising voices out of California.

Moese died in a quad accident. His vehicle left the road and he struck a telephone post and suffered major head trauma and died soon after the accident occurred.

The Reggae Festival Guide staff send Moese's family love and prayers.

Macka Diamond : : Macka Diamond
Charmaine Munroe, aka Macka Diamond was born in Kingston and grew up in Portmore. The influence of music was around Charmaine from an early age. Her father, Phillip Munroe, is a record producer who not only worked with some of the greats, but is also close friends with legendary Dancehall Producer, King Jammy’s, and Reggae Music’s Production dynamite duo, Sly & Robbie. The determination that drives Macka Diamond today has been with her from the very beginning, because instead of using her father’s connections to get her foot in the door, Macka decided to do it alone.

Jamaican music has long been infamous for its macho braggadocio and its unashamedly sexist stance, so when a woman enters this male dominated arena and ends up beating the men at their own game, you have little choice but to pay attention.… that’s exactly what Macka Diamond has done, scoring several monster hits over the last few years, and even walking away with one of Reggae/Dancehall Music’s most coveted awards, Female DJ of the Year, on not one, but three occasions, back-to-back.

Richie Spice : : Richie Spice
Kingston-based dancehall singer Richie Spice (a.k.a. Richell Bonner) comes from a reggae family: his brothers include DJ Snatcher Dogg, vocalist Spanner Banner, and producer Pliers of Chakademus and Pliers. Spice began his career opening his brothers' shows and started recording singles with producers like Clive Hunt and Dennis "Star" Hayles in the mid-'90s. His debut album, Out of the Blue, arrived soon after, and his second, Universal, was released in 2000.

Amp Fiddler : : Inspiration Information
Purveyors of fine music compilations, Strut have branched out into fresh studio recordings by pairing up acclaimed artists for exclusive five-day sessions. In this first installment, former Funkadelician and contemporary smooth-soul rambler Amp Fiddler meets esteemed 80s soul and reggae producers and rhythm section Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. There are some interesting touches from the renowned Jamaican duo but the Fiddler comes out on top, and this thoughtfully presented release appears more an extension of his solo oeuvre with his longing, smoky vocals fitting delightfully glove-like on the rare, genuinely reggae-inflected tracks.

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.

If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.

If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.

If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.

If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.

-Lao Tse
