This is my third CD. The first, “Faith”, was very much a blues CD. The second, “Down at the Aloha”, showed my growing interest in soul music, and had a stronger storytelling bent. This one, “Play for Love”, is harder to categorize, and is much more personal.
In the six years since my last CD, I’ve become a father and watched my two daughters begin their journeys into childhood. I’ve tried hard to balance a heavy performance and teaching schedule with a heavy schedule as ‘dad’. The songs on this new CD are the ones that bubbled to the surface, through all the stress and craziness of early parenthood.
Stylistically, the songs show blues and soul influences, but don’t fit obviously into one bag or the other. They come from places of beauty and fear, wonder and anger and pain. Honestly, these are not songs that I sat down and tried to write. I didn’t have time for that. These are songs that I needed to write.
When I began to think about recording these songs, I wanted the recording process to be as honest as the songs themselves. So I picked a small studio -- The Sugar Shed in Bath, NH -- and gathered three of my favorite musicians: Jan Schultz on Fender bass, Brett Hoffman on drums, and Ira Friedman on Hammond organ and Wurlitzer electric piano. We played all the songs live, in the same room together, and let them come to life. And that's what's on the CD.

Mike Zito's passion for music has long been fueled by his love of the guitar and the icons who helped propel the instrument to its legendary status. While growing up Zito was initially captivated by the innovative guitar sounds of Eddie Van Halen, but later discovered the soulful blues inspired playing of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. A job fresh out of high school working at the local music store, Tower Grove Music, near his home in St. Louis, Missouri, further solidified his enthusiasm and devotion to his craft. The journey towards stardom and a life long career in music was officially underway.
After years of tirelessly touring and four independently released projects under his belt, 2008 heralded the national debut of Zito’s album "Today" on Eclecto Groove Records. Boasting top notch production values with the guidance of producers David Z. (Prince, Buddy Guy, Etta James, Jonny Lang) and Tony Braunagel (Eric Burdon, Taj Mahal, Phantom Blues Band), along with assistance from a team of world class musicians including keyboardist Bentmont Tench (Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash) and bassist James “Hutch” Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Joe Cocker), Zito realized his most satisfying and accomplished work to date. “Today” garnered high praise and critical acclaim for Zito’s strengthened focus on songwriting and his resulting efforts landed his album on the Billboard Blues charts for six weeks, in addition to daily rotation on Sirius Satellite Radio over the past year.
Now Zito returns with his follow up effort "Pearl River", accompanied by the skillfully adept David Z. sitting in once again at the helm of the producer’s chair, along with label CEO Randy Chortkoff. With his guitar back to the forefront, Zito revisits his musical roots while still maintaining an emphasis on his affective songwriting. “Pearl River” stands as another solid achievement by Mike Zito who is joined this time out by a handful of special guests including Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, Reese Wynans (Double Trouble), Susan Cowsill, Lynwood Slim and Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone. The result is a rollicking slice of Americana served up with heaping slabs of greasy New Orleans funk, gritty blues and good old fashioned rock 'n' roll.

Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale MS Participating in Museum Day on September 26
|
| On Saturday, September 26, the Delta Blues Museum will participate in the fifth annual Museum Day, sponsored by Smithsonian magazine. On that day, visitors who have a Museum Day Admission Card will be admitted free.
Established in 1979, the Delta Blues Museum is Mississippi's oldest music museum. Among the many artifacts on display are guitars formerly played by John Lee Hooker, B. B. King, Jimmie Burns, James 'Son' Thomas and many early Stella guitars, the likes of which were favored by classic Delta blues musicians Charley Patton, Willie Brown, Skip James and a host of others.
The Muddy Waters' cabin from Stovall Plantation is also on display as well as the Muddywood Guitar, crafted from a plank from the cabin for use by the famed rock group ZZTop. Numerous other blues artists are featured with instruments, performance attire, and photographs.
Current exhibits include "Notes from the Mississippi Delta" a collection of photographs in and around the Mississippi Delta by Australian native Nathan Miller and "Charlie Musselwhite: Son of Mississippi, Citizen of the World". The Musselwhite exhibit contains artifacts and memorabilia chronicling his life and times in Mississippi, Memphis, Chicago and California.

WEST FEST - CELEBRATING THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOODSTOCK

Woodstock was not just an event, a happening, or a concert with 400,000 people. It was a pivotal moment of realization for an entire generation, an epiphany, a moment of realization for the entire country. The hip movement started in San Francisco a couple of years earlier in the Haight Ashbury and the “Summer of Love” had spread across the nation. There were now millions of hip people with 400,000 of them converging on Woodstock.
Woodstock was a statement to the world, “humanity had evolved”, coming together through peace, love and spirituality. An event whose original intent was to make money became the largest FREE event in history. The hip movement had come of age and was recognized by the world. The principles of love swept the country and we had become the ‘Woodstock Nation”.
Hundreds of San Francisco stars and musical luminaries will perform at this October 25, 2009 event to commemorate the original principles of peace, love and spirituality. The Woodstock 40th will begin with a blessing by the American Indigenous People and several Beat Generation poets. There will be many speakers from the Peace Movement, the Free Speech Movement and the Anti-War Movement along with many of the acts who originally performed at Woodstock (to be announced). There will also be an “Eco Friendly Green Village” highlighting the products, services, and information of the emerging green movement.

Why You Need to Know Her: A self-proclaimed former “skate punk” from California, Laura Chavez stopped jaded journalists in their tracks when the then 21-year old guitarist appeared at the 2003 NAMM show, backing singer Lara Price. In 2006, she won the Northern California Region sectional for Guitar Center’s King of the Blues competition. Now, after toiling in relative obscurity for years, her outsize talent is finally getting the national and international audience it merits in the band of saucy singer Candye Kane. Chavez puts the “bad” in Kane’s “I’m a Bad, Bad Girl,” biting off chunks of nasty notes and in the process putting to rest all questions of gender. Not only are her chops immaculate, but meaningful notes that depend on genuine expression rather than velocity flow effortlessly from her fingers. Whether swinging the blues on “Hey! Toughen Up” or digging deep into a swampy take on “You Need Love,” Chavez makes every one count. And she is legendary in her home state for a staggering live version of “Little Wing” that acknowledges both Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan before she makes it her own and drains every last ounce of emotion from the challenging rock guitar classic.

Why You Need to Know Him: At age 25, New Jersey’s Dave Gross is way younger than the vintage axes from which he wrings his juicy tones, and the barely-contained explosive energy on his third solo release surely tests those guitars’ structural integrity. With authority that belies his years, the guitarist, vocalist, bandleader, arranger, songwriter and producer plays low-down New Orleans blues, sweaty rock ’n’ roll, and loose-limbed zoot-suited jump blues on a variety of electrics. In addition, he performs evocative classic jazz on his 1925 Gibson L-4 strung with .015–.068 (!) gauge strings. Though possessing the requisite chops to satisfy contemporary expectations, he thrills with the fire of his emotions rather than through a blizzard of notes, as on the grooving slow drag of the original “Find Yourself Another Man.” Featuring a thick “saxy” tone and tube-torturing distortion, he sounds like he is literally yanking the notes out of his guitar with every beat of his broken heart. In June of this year, Gross was nominated for a 2009 Blues Blast Music Award in the “Sean Costello Rising Star” category.

Why You Need to Know Him: A hardened road dog from St. Louis who was initially inspired by Van Halen until he discovered the tough sounds of the city’s south side, Mike Zito had garnered much praise for the expansive Americana songwriting heard on his four independent releases. But on Pearl River, his second release for Electro Groove, he shows his true nature as a bona fide blues guitar hero. With maximum ferocity on the relentlessly surging “Dirty Blonde,” he proclaims that he has more than enough firepower to blow the back doors off any blues club. Even on the lazy minor key funk of “Change My Ways,” he plays like his very life depends on every note being wrenched from his Strat. His slide playing on “Natural Born Lover” howls like a hellhound. Not just another “slow blues and shuffle” cat, Zito expertly mines the rich rhythmic traditions of New Orleans, playing off the funky syncopation on tracks like “Big Mouth” while twisting the neck of his guitar into a pretzel. This week we’re still in Mississippi… Once there it’s hard to leave! From live music to museums, there is so much going on – and NEVER enough time!
Our week in the Mississippi Delta included visits to the B.B. King Blues Museum in Indianola and the Highway 61 Blues Museum in Leland, and a visit with Shelly Ritter from the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale. Each museum offers its unique slant on the rich culture of blues music, and all are “musts” for blues lovers visiting the area. We capped our week in the Delta with live music by Delta native Robert “Bilbo” Walker at Ground Zero and at Red’s Lounge for a 69th birthday party for northeast Mississippi native Robert Belfour, who played for his party guests.
Saturday was spent at the 18th Annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Blues & Heritage Festival in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where the music was concentrated toward the “Southern” (soul) end of blues and the food emphasized local Gulf fare such as huge boiled shrimp.
This festival is presented by the Mississippi Gulf Blues and Heritage Commission, which is comprised of 40 volunteers. The group was formed nearly 20 years ago and has many long-time members, including Victoria Webb, who is very active at 101 years young. She was seen throughout the day providing programs to attendees (see photo) and occasionally even stopping to dance with friends. The areas from Pascagoula through Biloxi to Gulf Port were among the hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina four years ago, and while those areas are still suffering from that disaster, it was wonderful to see so many businesses back in operation since our last visit three years ago.
A special treat on the way back from the Gulf was a side trip to the Howlin’ Wolf Blues Museum located in West Point in eastern Mississippi, only a few miles down the road from Wolf’s birthplace of White Station. The museum is sponsored by the Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society and bears the fruit of the labors of the society’s Program Director/Vice President, Richard Ramsey. Richard is a West Point native who can remember selling Howlin’ Wolf (Chester Burnett) hunting licenses and supplies at his dad’s hardware store as a kid. He provided many items in the museum, secured other items, and spent countless hours insuring that the displays are presented in a manner suitable for a blues man Howlin’ Wolf’s stature. The Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society hosts a one-day blues festival in Wolf’s honor in West Point each year around Labor Day and has also erected an etched granite statue of the great Wolf in a downtown West Point park. These are wonderful accomplishments by a small group in honoring one of the greats of the blues. West Point is located near the Alabama border and is about 150 miles south of Memphis and 150 miles east of the Delta region. It’s a side trip but one well worth the effort.

Dog and Music Lovers Invited to Benefit for Braveheart Dog Rescue Oct 10
