Yum!
Sweet little sippers are here.

Emily likes to sip tea through hers (she's the one who pointed them out to us in New York this past summer). You can try this too. How about Hot Chocolate through a Peppermint Stick? Yum!

We have Lemon, Orange, and Lime too. Of course feel free to just munch on a plain one. It might just remind you of the neighborhood penny candy jars. Remember them?

Talented individuals
We have a couple of new smiling folks here in the shop. This, for me, is one of the pleasures of this business: all the fun people I get to meet.

Anne, pictured on the left, is a student at UNC-Asheville. She is quite interested in making history visual through the creation of interactive maps (cool, huh?) She is studying history, political science, photography, and geography when she is not gracing us with her smiling presence.

Virginia, the gal with the glasses, is also interesting. She is getting ready to study the business of Medical Office administration, hoping to do work with a company that does medical research, (which seems scary to me). She is married to our Charles, and is a terrific addition to the front of house gang.

Welcome to both of you!

"Killer Pecans"
"3 Pepper Walnuts"
"Hootchie Cootchie Cashews"
"Tree Nuts"
and
"Poco Loco Peanuts"

Each one is different. Some Zing. Some soothe. We like all of them so give 'em all a try.
They're small, after all.

Youth Fresh Foods Initiative
What a treasure we have near here. Casey McKissock had the imagination and foresight to start working with troubled adolescents at the Buncombe Community School. Together with some students from the Sustainable Agriculture program at Warren Wilson College he has helped take a barren plot of schoolyard and transform it into a functional productive garden.

I think I told you that we give them our compostable materials which they turn into rich compost which they then turn into the clay - making a perfect bed for the delightfully perfect produce they then bring us. We think it's the perfect relationship.

Their celebration last week was lovely. A couple of the students played bluegrass or punk rock (both were well received). Guests ate barbecue, our coleslaw and potato salad, and candy apples - which had been made by the students. We had a tour of the grounds, heard about their plans, and, well, got a good look at one of the sweetest things I've seen in a long time.

Here's a picture of a gourd growing on the outside of their shade pavilion. The structure sits in the middle of the field and is surrounded by an herb patch, strawberries (which were in flower!) peas, kale, and various cover crops. I can hardly wait til next spring when we get to see the bounty of their labors. We'll be sure to point it out for you when the time comes.

Cheers to Casey and his gang.

Holiday Parties
Can you believe it? December is creeping right up on us and it really is time for you to save your date with us. We'd love to take care of you, but people are really calling a lot and we don't want you to miss out.

Here's a thought for something fun and different: How about bringing your party here to our Garden Room and treating your guests to an evening of cooking together. We can do hands-on "stations" and can also have demonstrations if you prefer. Some folks are already planning to do this with us and I thought you might like to imagine something similar for your event. "An Evening at Laurey's" (you won't even have to vacuum your living room!)

"An Evening in Tuscany" or "Hors d'oeuvres and Wines from Provence" or "Winter Wonderland" or, well, you tell us! We have the perfect set up for food and wine and fun. (We even have our own resident DJ these days. Current tunes, bluegrass, mountain music, you name it.)

Give us a call to save your date. We'll figure out the details next month, okay?

A Note from Laurey
October 23, 2004

Hi there. Zounds – here we are at the end of October. What the heck happened to the summer? Where has the light gone? What kind of winter will we have?

It amazes me to note that we are now at our one year anniversary in this new space. I cannot imagine how we ever fit into the little shop we moved from. The tables here are filled every day these days. The shop bustles. “Basket World,” the place up front where we have retail products for sale, is full of all our new finds from this summer’s Fancy Food Show. We’re gearing up for Gift Basket season, Thanksgiving, Holiday Parties…phewf!

A year ago I was a wreck. I had been thinking about the new space for months, planning, imagining, drawing, hoping. I had file folders filled with specifications of equipment, lists of pots and pans and racks and shelves. The only comfort was that my folders were bright-colored, which made me happy. What was inside the folders was scary, because all the equipment cost a lot of money and I was just not sure that moving was the right thing to do. What if no one came to the new shop? What if I spent all this money for nothing? What if things didn’t fit?

I remember not sleeping much last year at this time. I’d wake up, sweating and panic-stricken, worrying about laundry hampers and brooms and dry storage and signs. I lost weight, which is not such a bad thing I guess, but I really felt ragged. Calls to my sisters in the middle of the night were frequent. “You are doing the right thing,” they’d say. “You’ve done your homework. You’ll be fine.”

So here we are, one year later, bustling and happy and comfortable in the new space. It has taken a long time for some things (we’re just now getting signs for the shop –which should be in very soon) and we’ll probably always be tweaking our systems. But we’re much happier. There is room in our storage areas. We have space in our walk-in refrigerator to accommodate much more local produce – which makes all of us VERY happy. And there is plenty of room for you to come in, get some of our handmade salads and soups, sit in our sunny café, and take a break from the haste of your life.

If you haven’t been here in a while, do drop in. If you’re from out of town, come for a visit. We’re delighted to get to meet you and share some of our light with you.

“Coming to Asheville? Come to Laurey’s!”
We hope you do!

Talk to you soon,
Laurey

Pumpkin Contest
The gang here has decided to have a Pumpkin Carving contest. We've picked this Wednesday as our day. Come in, see which one you like, and cast your vote. The winner will be a "people's choice" with the top prize being a big bag of chocolate (or something along those lines.)

The brave ones here will be in costume too. (I'll be sporting my favorite pin which says, "This IS my costume!")

Do plan to join in on our fun!

(If you'd like to, feel free to bring in YOUR pumpkin. We'll tuck it in with ours and see how it goes.)
