Local Strawberries

A local fellow comes by when we least expect him with a truck full of buckets of these beauties. Richard came into the office announcing he'd just bought two buckets for the kitchen and the office gang went into a tizzy - excitedly bouncing around, wanting more.

I ran out front and caught up with our friend and bought the last of this trip's haul. Walking back to the shop a fellow, in passing, said he'd been able to catch their prefumed aroma a half a block away. Now THAT'S a ripe berry!

Come see - I'm sure they'll be in our fruit salad this week.

The Market

Can you imagine this? Twice a week the trucks pull in, the tents go up, the banners fly and so does the produce. Sometimes I just look out our front window and smile, happy to have so much freshness so close.

Dr. Seuss Onions

Another fellow showed up with these babies. His back seat was loaded with them, and so I bought an arm full and stuck them in a red bucket right next to the cash register.

Locally grown things are not always edible, but a feast for the eyes is a good thing too.

A view into the kitchen

This is Elyse, our summer intern from the local culinary school. She's a quiet one but is doing good work. Here she assembles a line up of lasagnas for a party. Earlier today she was skewering chicken, cutting peppers, making herbed cheese bites.

Tomorrow she'll come with me to set up a big Sunday brunch and then, later in the week, will get to help at a pretty fancy rehearsal finner we're serving up on a rooftop. That, after all, is the benefit of an internship, you know, a little of this and a little of that.

Chocobillys are back

I love these cookies: little morsels of sweetness.

I love the packages: folk art-decorated boxes.

The bakers live and work just south of here.

Another local product. Another reason to be happy.

This morning's beauty

This blast of red emerged just this morning. Last night it was a fat bud. With daylight it opened, showing me its lush red petals. The purples in the garden are starting to drift into reds. I saw one tiny hint of yellow, but there's a lot on the way, tiger lilies are just about ready and so is the St. John's Wort. The spectacle continues. I watch.

A Note From Laurey

Oh dear, it's already mid-afternoon.

The morning has not been slow. We have a couple of weddings, some big deliveries to do, some large pick ups. It's still graduation time and it's still wedding time (I'll say!) and it's just plain old celebration time.

My first task was to decorate a cake. By the time it was done it looked like it was strung with pearls and it had leaves drooping over the edges. I do hope the celbrants like it. To me it seems very "early June." My hands just piped things out, no brain was involved. Fun.

When the cake was done I played car rental games. This is all a part of my day, part of my job, part of my fun. When I got to the car place there was no van to be had. I'd been dropped off, however (oops!) so I hitched a ride back to work with their delivery gent, arriving just in time for my morning meeting with a bride and groom. About two hours later the car folks called, telling me that my van had been found (!) and they were on their way to get me. The good part about all of this was that I got two rides with their delivery fellow and we had two good conversations about stress and excitement and such.

A guide of mine told me a Fritz Perls quote: The only difference between anxiety and excitement is how open your heart is. On days like this I try to remember those words and relax, as much as possible, into an unexpected conversation, a surprise turn of events, something out of the norm. Sometimes I'm good at the surprise, sometimes not. Today, so far, I am.

Take care. Enjoy the sun. I'll tell you a story or two next week.

Cheers.
Laurey
