White "Donut" Peaches |
|
Okay - true confessions:
Yesterday I heard Adam call back here to the office on the intercom. It was a bit of a crackly call, but it sounded like donuts. Something like, "Do you want to take a picture of these flat donuts?"
Mid afternoon for me is a low time and a spot of sugar, from donuts, seemed like just the right thing.
"Donuts! You bet!!!"
Emily, sitting much closer to her intercom than I, burst out laughing.
"Donut PEACHES," she hooted, "Not real donuts."
I took the picture, even though they were the fruit kind, not the baked kind.

Kris is back |
Kris left after she had her baby, but she is an energetic one and she has come back. She's here part time, but most of that is in the early morning which is GREAT as far as I am concerned, because she gets muffins and coffee cakes and trifles and cookies pumped out, wrapped up, and on display by 8 most days.
Hooray!

Pistachio-crusted Snapper |

Words are great and often suffice, but a picture is a terrific addition here and there. This is a shot of yesterday's dinner to go. If you have not tried one of these, I would encourage you to give 'em a shot. You get to think about the options for a whole week (or a month if that suits you) and then, on a whim or with advance planning, you can call us, place your order and, a few hours later, take dinner home. Grand!

Black beauties |
This a "before" snap. We've been seizing the blackberry moment, making jars and jars and jars. Next week we'll be making blueberry jam too. And in a little bit we'll be cranking up with peach chutney and then apple chutney and then, a little later, with cranberry chutney.
Jam Babe's Jam. Chutney Babe's Chutney.
Makes me smile.

Here's what it looks like when it's all jarred up.
In random samplings (me, my friends, and the staff here) it's a very good year for this elixir. Some people, not wanting to take any chances, have reserved whole cases. You know what is only 5 months away.
Want some? Come and git it!

Mr. Stripey takes Center Stage |
Oh such color!
We have a nice big wedding this evening. These fellows are the feature for the First Course: layered with Cherokee Purples and German Pinks and Buffalo Mozzarella and fresh Basil and a swizzle of Balsamic Vinaigrette.
Of course I'll show you some pictures - next week. |

A Note From Laurey |
|
July 22, 2006
Today is one of those days that has been in my mind for a long time. We have a big wedding this evening and I’m excited. It’s a very nice menu, a very nice location, and this sort of thing still gets me going (good thing!)
I had my morning all planned. Actually it included last night. Ah well. Best laid plans can often be foiled, right?
I had planned to take it easy, go to sleep early, wake up a bit late, and mosey in to work. I’ve been watching the Tour de France, however, so early nights have not been my recent norm. Things are so exciting right now with that bike race, the lead swapping riders almost every day. Two nights ago I’d stayed up until 1:30 which is quite unheard of for me. Chris is not a big “Tour” fan, but she is in Seattle right now, so I have been watching it, rapt and unable to do much of anything else. Good thing the race is almost over. I’ve got projects to do!
Last night I managed to get to sleep relatively early and set my alarm for 7 which, for me, is almost mid morning. Tye, the dog, was off at “Camp Martha” (Martha, one of the cooks, takes care of her for me on these busy weekends.) Skipper the cat was lolling about, acting like he was in charge – which he is, especially when Tye is gone. When I turned off my light I heard him go out the dog door – off for his evening’s outings.
He often comes in around dawn, hopping up on the bed and snuggling in for an hour or so. It’s usually nice. But this morning his morning greeting, usually a quiet little cry, was very loud and very close to my head and very urgent and was followed by an immediate series of high-pitched shrieks and flapping and, well, I was up and awake and out of bed in a nano-second, dodging the latest of his gifts – a nice bat. (How he catches them I don’t know – I thought the things had sonar!) Since it was still pitch dark, I opted NOT to search for this treasure, but opened the door that leads out to the porch, closed the bedroom door, and am hoping for the best.
Once awake I realized that it was pouring down rain. This evening’s wedding is on top of a mountain and yes, there will be a tent, but, well, as you can imagine, it is much nicer to do an outdoor event, tent or no tent, under dry skies. Skipper was pacing, glaring, angry that his call of pride to me had resulted in the loss of his gift. I, sleepy and grumpy and awake, didn’t have a whole lot of sympathy for him.
The good news is that I think the storm has passed us by. It’s a sunny day now. The radar picture bodes well. And if it rains, we’ll cope.
Mostly I hope the bat is not waiting for me back at home. I’m sure that by the time I get there, after tonight’s party, I’ll want to just go to sleep. Without any flying companionship!
I’ll be in touch next week.
