The Weekly Newsletter
Menus and Stories for July 31 - August 11, 2006

Rachael, Dustin and baby Jones

This is the newest addition to my family. Jones, son of my niece and her husband, joined us very early in the morning on the Fourth of July. Jones has a head full of light brown hair and the lovliest soft skin. His dark blue/brown eyes are sharp. His smile is going to be a true delight. I met him last weekend and could not take my eyes off his lovely little face. All of us sat, staring, completely delighted by his very presence.

Last week's wedding

This family had a perfect night! Clear skies, balmy temperatures and a light breeze graced them.

We carried a lot of very nice tastes up to the top of their mountain. We had a crackerjack crew, and had a very nice time serving them a menu filled with locally grown foods of all kinds. What a true gift it is for me to be able to be a part of this farm to table cycle. It is one thing to hope to do something, but a big joy to actually be able to do it.

(I can't show you any food pictures because once we started putting everything on plates I forgot to stop to snap any images. But take my word for it, everything was lovely.)

Inaugurated a few months ago, our first winner was delighted! Maybe you'll win next month.

Order a lot? Enter a lot!
Good luck!!

B+L's Farm

I've been telling you about some of our farmers. This is a long shot of Barry and Laura's organic farm. These days they are supplying us with cases and cases of greens delights: chard and kales, fennel and peas, radishes (still!) and more.

Gorgeous!

Close up of Greens

Here's an interesting piece of information. At a recent meeting, Charlie Jackson, who is the Executive Director of Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Partners (ASAP), asked the gathered farmers to raise their hands if, in the past 60 days, they had been approached by a housing developer wanting to buy their land. 80% of the farmers raised their hands.

We must support these local farms (local farms, no matter where they are, need support.) Go to the tailgate markets. Shop at the stores who buy from these local farmers. Support restaurants who do too. ASAP lists all this information (I've included the link below.)

If we don't do this now, we'll lose the ability to do so later.

A tangle of Tomatoes

Here, not at all tidy, is the madness that is my tomato patch. With leggy stalks reaching way above their protective cages, unkempt looking and a big mess, these plants have already produced more than I can eat. They are now beginning to look a bit thin but a week ago it was nearly impossible to see my garden goddess hiding underneath (and providing essential support for the conglomeration.)

A Note From Laurey

Oh my, it is the end of July.

I’m just trying to clear off my desk in preparation for a week’s vacation in Seattle. Somehow each time I cross something off my list, I think of three or four things that need to get added. Sigh.

Today’s great pleasure is the photograph of my new baby nephew that I have taped to my computer. He is the sweetest, cutest little bundle. I’m immeasurably excited at the knowledge that I get to be a part of his life now. As I mentioned in the captions to the photographs of him that I put in this newsletter, my family and I are completely enchanted by him. My sister, his grandmother (!Whewf!! Is that possible?) is beside herself with this new treasure. My niece is a high school chemistry teacher and is planning to return to work soon, which is just fine with my sister because that means she gets to take care of Jones some of the time. Whole days of taking care of him. Unimaginable joy. (Okay – I know I’m a bit over the deep end about this, but I think it is an acceptable thing.)

And my second great pleasure of the day is that tomorrow I get to go to Seattle and see Chris and take some time away from here. Taking time is a good thing. Chris has made some plans for us so that will be fun too: sea-kayaking, dining out, driving down the coast of Washington, visiting some food colleagues here and there.

It has not been a slow summer at all and August looks just as full as it could be. I have lots to look forward to!

I hope you do too.

I’ll be in touch when I get back. I’m bringing my camera and will snap some beach scenes or some food scenes or some vacation scenes. And if they turn out, I’ll show ‘em to you when I return.

Sweet sleep
