The Egg Lady cometh!

One advantage to being somewhat small is that we can really use the small amounts of delights that grace our front door. This is a snap of our new egg delivery gal. When she calls she says, "It's the egg lady. Need any this week?" and we always say yes.

Hers are the eggs we use for all the egg treats in our deli case: breakfast burritos, quiches, and Martha's delectable deviled eggs too. (By the way, a favorite quick breakfast is the "Miller Special" (named after Karen who was our catering director until she moved to New York last year). It is one of Martha's eggs squished onto a slice of sourdough baguette. Perfect walking around food. Perfect to take the edge off, not to mention much better than one of those Mc things).

The "coffee cupping"

Here's a picture of our staff enjoying the "Coffee Cupping" that our coffee folks presented last month. The day was a sloppy one and all of you must have been out shopping for last minute presents or something (and none of you showed up!)

The great news is that it was a great experience for our staff and we have decided to do it all again - on a Saturday this time which will help you be able to come.

Please mark your calendar for Saturday, February 17th. 10:30 in the morning. You will have the chance to learn all about coffee and will smell, see, touch, and taste it, developing a vocabulary and appreciation for coffee. This is a wonderful opportunity and I hope you'll come.

There will be no charge for this tasting, but it will help us plan better if we know you are coming so jot a note (laurey@laureysyum.com) or give a call (252-1500) if you'd like to be put on the reservation list.

The Renegade Lunch Lady is coming!

Ann Cooper is a friend. And she is doing amazing work in the world of food for schoolchildren. Thanks to the combined efforts of a number of groups around here (Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Projects; Eat Better, Lean Better; AB Tech Culinary Program; Women Chefs and Restaurateurs; Malaprops) she is coming to town this coming weekend for a series of events.

Plese try to come to hear her.

The best chance you will have is to come to Malaprops to hear her talk and read from her new book Lunch Lessons. She'll be there at 7 on Saturday, January 13. If you have children or if you care about real food or if you want to meet an amazingly energetic person or if you just feel like meeting a dynamic soul - please come. And if you cna't come, do read her book. (I don't have children and I'm still completely immersed in the book at the moment. It's very inspiring!)

Dinners to go

Dinners, as you know, come with a freshly-made green salad, salad dressing of the day, and made-right-here bread of the day. We take reservations until noon or so. Please order by phone (252-1500), by FAX (252-02002) or stop in to speak to one of us in person.

As a reminder, every time you order a dinner to go you are eligible to enter our drawing. Just drop a card in our drawing jar (a business card works or fill out one of the cards that we have right here) and, at the end of the month, we'll pull one card which will be good for two free dinners-to-go.

Maybe you'll win next month.

Order a lot? Enter a lot!
Good luck!!

Fun in the snow

Sitting here at my desk with the sun pouring in outside (with very warm temperatures) it is hard to believe that just last week I was in Colorado, snowshoeing (this is Chris) and cavorting in the woods and hills of that world.

(Thought you might like to see some shots of my Christmas vacation.)

Everyone should have a kitten around for this sort of thing, don't you think?

A Note From Laurey

Hey there! Happy New Year! I’ve been waiting to say this. Haven’t gotten to my computer until just now.

What a great start we’re off to already. We had a week away, as you know, and we’re all back in the swing of things, raring to go and gearing up for a terrific year. The shop has been filled every day and that makes me very happy. Thanks for coming for lunch!

I got a note this week saying that my book is now moving toward the presses. What a process this all is. Who knew? I remember my mother working on her books – there were five in all – but things were very different then, some 40 years ago. The “galleys,” proofs of the book, were all printed out on one gigantic piece of paper and my mother would sit and drape the loop over her lap, reading, proofing, correcting, gathering the read pages in a pile on the floor. My proof was presented in individual pages which I flipped as you would expect, from right in front of me to a second stack on my left. Still, though the actual movements were different, pictures of her kept filling my visual thoughts as I worked through the reading and re-reading of my proofs.

The book should arrive here at the end of this month. Isn’t that something? We’ll bring it out and stack it up and make it available as soon as we can. If you get one or two, and you would like me to do so, I’ll be delighted to sign yours. Just let me know.

The very exciting thing is that we’ve got a date for the “book release” which will officially be on Saturday, February 17th at Malaprops. I’ll be there reading some of the pieces – presenting them to you and the world for the first time. What a thrill. Please mark the date on your calendar, won’t you?

In other news (is there any other news?) well, um, I guess I have to admit that my focus has really been on this book for such a long time that I’m not really thinking about much else at the moment. So, go out, enjoy the sunshine (it WILL turn gloomy around here at some point so take advantage of this spectacular weather) and come see us when you feel hungry.

Cheers, and thanks for making things so good!

Santa's helper

This is Rosemary, our baker's daughter. Her school let out before we did so Kris brought her to work a couple of times before we broke for our holiday.

Rosemary is a great roll-maker, cookie decorator, and sweet spirit. (And she's VERY cute!!!)
