We're WIRELESS!!
We have some very "with it" friends.  One of them suggested that wi-fi access might be a good thing.  We agreed.  Before I could even THINK he'd come in and fixed us up.

Now you can come, read your e-mail, play Lexulous, check out the latest stock quotes (only if you want to) and be hooked up.  Mornings are still kind of quiet around here, so that's a good time for a made-to-order omelet and a little computing.  In the afternoon, after our lunch rush is done, come and have some coffee and a cookie.

NICE! (Thanks Ted.)

Oh, this picture is my big computer and my little computer and some of the gadgets I'm going to take on my bike ride. That's a phone, but the other thing is my new video camera.  I'll be making little movies and putting them onto my blog by loading them onto this cutie pie little netbook computer.  (I feel so smart!)

That's a wrap!
I talk about the cafe so much (I love our space) but sometimes I forget about our delivered, drop-off lunches.  We DO still do these kinds of things, more and more as the weather warms up.

Have our wrap lunch for your next meeting.  It's our most economical option and is really a terrific deal.  Not to mention, it's made right here and is really delicious.  We have a big selection of lunch things.  Check 'em out.

I'm the luckiest!
See, I get to come in before any of you, get to go into the kitchen, get to say hello, get to ask the chef to make me some french toast, and get to take it to my desk to eat!  Lucky lucky me!

Right in the middle of this particular breakfast (this morning) someone called to ask if she could have some french toast even though it was not yet Sunday.  I wiped the syrup (Vermont maple, of course) off my mouth and, after admitting that I was, indeed, enjoying french toast RIGHT THEN, told her she could have it any day.  No need to wait for Sunday.  We make breakfast every day now.

Hooray for French Toast!!

Blueberry Jam
Yes siree, I made this jam my very self.  (I had help from my jam babe associates, but I was the one who measured, stirred, and ran the canning machine.)

This is our house jam now.  Just like my mother, I make this with berries that are not fully ripe and I don't add as much sugar as they suggest.  The result is a delightfully not-too-sweet jam that really tastes like blueberries.

The berries are local and organic. Need I say more?

More granola
Kether made it.
I wrote about it.
It sold out.
Now she's made more.
Tra la.
Come try some!

A Note from Laurey
Hiya,

It is Valentine's Day as I write this note. I'm spending my lunch break jotting this note to you. I'm at part s of Bee School this weekend. Sigh. It's such a big and complex topic. I mean, I'm REALLY glad I'm doing this, learning about this mysterious elixir and the lovely creatures who make it, but I am, once again, fairly overwhelmed.

Bees, after all, are living beings. So it's not a hobby like my glassblowing. With that, if I don't do it, nothing happens. But with bees, I am much more involved. They need me and I am fumbling around, trying to figure out my part in their lives.

This time of year is when they are most vulnerable. They are coming out of their slowness and, as the days warm up, they venture out of their hives, hoping, looking for something to eat. If there is not enough stored food in their hive, and there is nothing to eat out in the spring world, they don't make it. This is a tremendous responsibility. I mean, I got into this to try to help them. And, as I look for signs of their health, I worry that I have not done my part. Time will tell, of course. You shouldn't disturb them if the weather is not warm enough so I've kept my distance, hoping, hoping, hoping.

I'm meeting experienced bee keepers who have had their own struggles in the beginning years. But they persist and learn more and apologize for their mistakes and go on. So shall I. And if, by some miracle, these gals HAVE made it, I'll celebrate their stamina and their ability to succeed, regardless of my ineptitude.

I'll miss the next two months of their lives. I will truly miss them. I have some friends who have offered to baby (bee) sit and I hope they won't find horrible mistakes in my first year attempts to join their ranks. When I come back, in early May, I'll reassess and take it from there.

So now it's time to hop back to class.
I'll be in touch next week.

Happy Valentine's Day to you and your little bees (whoever they are.)

Ciao!

Our cooking classes
The first class was fun!
We made four casseroles and then got to try them all.
This week we'll be making some Tuscan things.
Elsie favorites will be taught the next week.
Then it's Chris's turn.
I think there might be a spot or two left in his classes.

This was our Chicken Pot Pie.
(Yum is right).
