The BEST!
So yes, we are given very good food.  But on this day I didn't take good enough care to choose things that would last for very long.  And along about 2, feeling suddenly ravenous, I scooted into a little store and just about bought the gal out.

She stepped outside for a smoke break and caught me snapping this picture.

"You taking a picture of ICE cream?" she asked.

"Yes," I said.

And I told her about my big bike ride and she took another long pull on her cigarette and said, "Well, hon, good for you."

I finished my ice cream, got on my bike, and rode off.

This Saturday - at our place (in Asheville)
This will be a fun night.  Do mark your calendars.  Invite some friends.  And come celebrate with us.

On March 21, we are going to do a special Dinner and Conversation, featuring food and wines from Argentina!

Here are the details again:

For starters, we'll be making Empanadas, a trio of authentic bites for you to taste.  We'll have Gambas a la Plancha too (Shrimp, grilled with garlic, that is).

Then we'll let you try "Locro," an Argentinian Corn Stew.

And then, Grilled Flank Steak and assorted Grilled Sausages with Chimichurri Sauce.  We'll have Roasted Spring Vegetables and plenty of crusty bread to sop up all the juices too.

Dessert is a layered Dulce de Leche cake with Cinammon Ice Cream.

Devon Price, from The Country Vinter, will be joining us and will be pouring wines to accompany each course.  He's been to Argentina and will guide you through the dinner.  Don't worry though, he's informal and so are we.  Part of this will be a buffet, part will be seated.  Invite some friends and celebrate the beginning of Spring with them and us.

The price will be 50.00 per person (+ tax).  Call us to save your spots!  252-1500.

Early morning interview
This morning the folks from the local ovarian cancer chapter came to meet me and interview me and wave some teal feather boas around.  It was quite the sunrise send off.  I cried a little bit and then answered the questions and told the interviewer I'd look forward to seeing her in July in Washington at the big ovarian cancer conference.

It was a touching start to my day.

Feeling wild - and here's the sign
This one caused my gang to screech to a stop.  This was the Adopt-a-highway group for this section of Route 60.  We all snapped away and it was hard to leave these words.  Maybe I am secretly a Wild Woman of the West.  On a bike.

Darlene's pie menu
I met Darlene in Quartzite.  MAN can she make a fine pecan sticky bun.  The spelling leaves one wondering exactly what one is going to get, but the thing that lands on the plate is perfect.

Darlene's is a big pie joint, able to accommodate 60 people, it seems, all under one of those temporary tin warehouse jobs.  We, being there at about 8, were left alone.  But Darlene di want to know all about our dinners to go (at Laurey's.)  She allowed as how she thought that was a pretty good idea and she thought she might like to expand her pie business to include dinners.  So if you're in Quartzite, maybe you can get some dinner.  But regardless, DO get some pie - or a sticky bun!

Parked outside the Brenda grocery
Yes.  For real.  This little van held a donkey and a small Brahma bull.  A small divider kept the two apart, but they were mostly interested in things going on outside their little rooms.  They are part of a donkey and bull show, it seems.  Parked in that lot, there was no performing - other than the charm of their sweet faces.

A Note from Laurey
Whew!  A week of riding is done.  I'm in Phoenix. Tomorrow our group starts our first major ascent, riding 4,000' up into the mountains.  We'll stay up there, or higher, until we cross into New Mexico and have a rest day in Silver City on March 18th.  What a wild and challenging thing this is.

Right now I am nursing a very sunburned right side of my face, right ear, right calf, right leg, right arm.  We've been riding east and the sun is not quite overhead, but hits us fulling on the right side.  Yipes.  Sunscreen is, of course, liberally applied, but it wears out soon too.

The adventure is huge.  Leaving there, learning to live here, remembering to breathe, trying to stay in the moment of what is going on right here right now - that's a good one.  A hard one.  I think about you quite a lot.  I think about work, the folks there, you coming for lunch.  Tomorrow is Sunday and I did not get done riding today early enough to get this newsletter done sooner but IDO want to tell you that Jon, our wonderful friend, van driver, delivery fellow AND guitar player, is going to start playing on Sundays for our brunch.  I think he'll be there between 11 and 1.  And I think he starts tomorrow.  He is terrific so I hope you'll make a point to go hear him.

But I'm also trying to let myself really fully be in THIS experience. I realize I have not stopped working for 21 years, at least for this long of a time.  This is, sort of, a sabbatical, so I'm trying to stick my brain on my bike and keep it there.  It's hard.

I HAVE been updating my blog every day and also have been updating my Laurey Bikes facebook page too.  If you'd like to check in on them, feel free.  The blog link is right below here.

And boy oh boy I'm TIRED so I hope you'll forgive me if I say goodnight.

Yes I DO miss you, but I am REALLY happy to be here doing this.
I WILL come back.  But it's going to be another bit of time.
I have to do some more riding first.

For now -
Cheers,
Laurey

Laurey Bikes - the blog

I confess
So when I ran out of energy today, before I ate that ice cream sandwich, I downed Doritos and a chocolate milk.  My riding friend was eating a balance bar and some Lipton green tea iced tea.  She said she wouldn't eat anything that she would not put in her blog.  So, um, I felt that I should also be honest in MY reporting of what I had to eat.

After this, as I pointed out before, I had an ice cream sandwich, and then a cheap, candy-covered granola bar.

Biking is GREAT!
