Jam Babes |
Jam Babes make Blueberry, as you know, and Blackberry Jam too. I made biscuits yesterday at the Swannanoa School of Culinary Arts and had the pleasure of eating my own jam. It's funny. I make it. I sell it. But I don't often eat it. Yesterday I did. And it was really good!
(Trust me on this one.)

Adam, cheese finder extraordinaire, has a new one. Jersey cow's milk blue cheese from Georgia.
He keeps the cheese cooler filled. You get to taste a bunch of wonderful cheeses. Hooray!
(check out their website. It's quite a fine story - and right in line with the kinds of products and producers we like.)

Coming Soon... |
We used to sell these trivets. We sold out of them. We changed our logo. And, though people asked, we never re-ordered.
Last week I went to the Southern Highlands Craft Fair and was reminded of our trivets (they were on display in the booth of the artist who makes them.) She told me that everyone keeps trying to buy the sample. So, it seemed like a good thing - to restock.
She's working on our order. I'll let you know when they're here.

It's tomato time (almost) |
|
Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Projects has a monthly promotion of our local vegetables. August is tomato month.
On August 5th I will be cooking and demonstrating at the French Broad Tailgate Market. I'll be there from 3 - 6, I think. (I'll know more next week.) I get to "shop" (for free) from all the vendors and cook for you. You then get to buy the ingredients from them.
Sweet! (See you there.)
Also, here's your first notice about our next Farmer's dinner. I'll be out of town on the 20th so we're going together here on the 13th. These are FUN dinners so please put it on your calendar. I'll tell you more next week.

You might notice our table arrangements. (These, truth, are not ours but are form the tailgate market.) One of us is keeping them filled with herbs and flowers from our backyard

A Note from Laurey |
|
July 24, 2009
Friday. Bele Cher. We’re surrounded.
For those of you who are not from Asheville, Bele Cher is a big street festival. This year, for the first time, the stage is in the middle of our block, which means that WE are in the middle of the festival. All sorts of people we do not know have been wandering in all day long: musicians hauling assorted instruments, burly men with tools dangling form their belts, out-of-towners who look dazed by the heat.
It has made for an interesting day.
Our street is closed off. Our block is closed off. This area of town has been transformed.
By Monday it will be back to normal.
As soon as I finish this note I am going to go out and wander around. I must be truthful and tell you that I like festival food. At times like this, paying $5.00 for a squeezed lemon in a cup full of ice doesn’t seem at all absurd. (What?!!) I like strolling through a sausage-grilling area. I like coming home smelling of French fries and funnel cakes. I like bouncing alongside punked out kids and motorcycle leatherheads as we all listen to beach music. (Really. This is true.)
Bele Cher is a pain in the neck for some. Many people close down. Many people leave town. We’re closing early and we will not be open tomorrow. But this IS a big festival and one can choose to sulk around or one can jump in and get sweaty and filled with foods that one might not eat at other times.
I’m choosing to take the leap in approach. Why not?
So yes, DO come downtown. DO buy a beer from one of the booths, even if they charge you twice what they should. (The money for the wristbands helps bring in the musicians – and anyone can listen to all the music for free.)
Or go for a hike if this madness is too much for you.
(As I write, the music outside has cranked up and my concentration is getting a serious workout…)
But don’t forget to come back next week. We’ll be right here. And we’ll be really happy to see you. Really!
Ciao, Laurey

The invasion, um, festivities |
I have to say it feels kind of funny in here today. This stage is RIGHT outside our front door. I mean RIGHT. (This is not trick photography.)
We're about to close (it's Friday afternoon as I write this) and I will then turn into a festival goes. Can't beat 'em, join 'em, right?
See you on Monday.
