Getting ready for August 18
Our August Dinner and Conversation will be all about Honey.

Foods made with honey.
Foods made from plants that bees pollinate.
Foods the rhyme with honey (okay, maybe not.)

These girls have been working hard and this dinner will be the first time their honey will be presented to the world.

Please mark August 18th on your calendar.  This will be a good one!

Volunteers in my garden
I sit on my front steps at lunch time, snack time, any time.  I must have nibbled on a handful of local tomatoes and I must have tossed a couple into the garden.

Look what happened!!!

Now I only need to reach down and pick to fill my belly with sweet SunGold cherry tomatoes.  And isn't THAT lovely?!

Morning glories for Ezra
My godson has a birthday next week.  I was present for his birth.  In anticipation of the big day, 23 years ago (is that right???) his mother planted seeds along a fence in Chicago where they lived.

They bloomed for the first time on the day he graced the world with his life.

Happy Birthday Ezra.
Happy Birthday to you, too, Barbie dear!!
These are my daily reminder of both of you.

Hope Notes - this Thursday (the 15th)
Liz Miller is one of those unique souls who graces our city.  Come here this coming Thursday to see her "Hope Notes," caring thoughts written by folks from our area.  The notes are intended for women who are victims of domestic violence.

Liz is spearheading a benefit here that will support Helpmate and its efforts to help get those women out of tragedy and onto their feet.  Follow the link here to read more.  And please come.

Lovelies
My gardens bloom full.
Snippets, wisps, and bright colors.
How lucky I am.

A note from Laurey

July 9, 2010

Ooo WHEE!!!

We’ve had a nice, cool week (Thank you AIR Conditioner installers!)

We just had a nice rain (Thank you rain creators.)

We’re nicely busy. (Thank YOU all!)

And I’m headed off on a bit of a vacation.

This will be a bike ride, a week-long jaunt with some of the women I rode across country with last spring. None of us can believe it has been this long. None of us have been riding very much (well, maybe Ann has!) And all of us are really looking forward to a week of easy enough riding, cavorting, sleeping, singing, and horsing around. I know I am.

I’ve been struggling to stop being sore for some time. My back has been creaky and not quite right. I’ve tried a whole lot of things to get better and nothing has really worked EXCEPT that a couple of weeks ago my chiropractor recommended a practitioner who, after interviewing me, realized that my aches and pains stemmed from that bike crash I had on my big ride, all the way last year.

And she’s fixing it!!!!

Hooray for her. Hooray for healing. Hooray for a return to health, to activity, to fun. I must say, it has been a bit sobering, thinking that I was creaking off into a time of diminished movement. I mean, everything was hurting. All the time. But no longer. Yay.

In the meantime, my bees are SO busy. When I get back I am going to see if I can pass the test to be a “certified” level beekeeper. We’ll see. My sister is going to keep things going at my homefront while I am away, watering the gardens, greeting my bees.

I’ll be back in a few days, more or less. And of course I’ll tell you some stories when I get back.

Say, don’t forget to come by and enjoy our nice, new, cool café. The food is stellar these days with the ace gang at the stoves. And as the local gardens produce, the farmers grace our door with their bounty. Lucky, lucky you. (Not to mention lucky, lucky us!)

Jenna's CD release party
Oh oh oh.  This gal is the sweetest, sparkliest, funnest ever!

Most Thursday nights are now music nights here, unless we have something else going on.  Keep a look out for what we have going on.  You'll have to wait until August because between Bele Cher and private parties we're booked up.  But the lineup for then is a good one.

Roots, Folk, and World Music.  Ahhhh.
