The Weekly Newsletter for September 19-23, 2011

A really big show
We catered a nice big party last night for a local manufacturer's Employee Appreciation dinner.  What a fest!!!

Emily and Noel here in the office did the whole thing (without me) and what a job they did!  There were over 500 guests and a whole bunch of children with a tent of their own filled with fun treats.

I thought I'd show you some snaps from the event.  (I'm very proud of the Laurey's team that pulled this party together with such grace.)

The guys carving the Tri-tips
The grown-ups had our Baked and Fried Chicken and also Grilled Tri-tip steaks.  You may recognize these fellows from our team.  Adam and Austin and Jon and Andy.  The temps were a bit chilly so I think they had the very best spot in the party - right next to the grills.

Watch out parents!
And the kids, with their own sugar loaded tent had a blast.  There was a Balloon Lady (who would not tell anyone her name other than The Balloon Lady!)  We had make-your-own candy bags and nice BLUE Cotton Candy (Adam got completely covered in Blue wisps of the sugar).  They had Root Beer Floats and Juice packets too.  Oh, and milk and water.

I'm told it was very loud and chaotic - and very fun.

One buffet - almost ready
With a big party like this the trick is to make it so the guests don't get lined up.  Leslie staggered the three buffets around the enormous tent and made them all double-sided.  Most convenient.  The kitchen team kept everything nicely presented and the buffet teams kept their buffets stocked.  Nice and smooth.

Drumming class is going to move (to Oct. 7th)
Jessie is a little squirt of a thing but MAN can she drum!!! (and we found we could too after a few hints and suggestions from this wonderful teacher.)

We had one session last month and had so much fun she agreed to come back.  Do join in.  It is REALLY fun!

Note - we're changing the date to accommodate vacationers and Rosh Hoshanna too.  Hope this date works for you.

Call her to save a spot: 828-777-5115 is her number.  The class costs just $20.00 (payable to her that night).  We start at 7:30 - and our cafe is closed so we can make as much noise as we wish.

Local cheese pre-dinner snacks
At the beginning of the evening, guests could nibble on local cheese platters.  We didn't want them to spoil their appetites so this is a perfect beginning to a fun meal.  AND - we love the plethora of locally made cheeses we have.

A word or two from Laurey
September 16, 2011

BRRR! I have started to add layers. Today I have a fleece sweater AND a fleece jacket. I’m glad to need them. Fall IS my favorite season (well, whenever the new season comes I am invigorated by the change.) By the time it turns into winter, that’ll be my favorite. Egalitarian, yes?

It has been a very good week, even great at times. Whew! I had big surgery a little more than two weeks ago and am finally pain-free. What a gigantic relief. I feel for anyone who has chronic pain – it really saps a girl. Today, though, I woke up feeling very close to my normal self. I have been out and have been seeing people and doing things and feeling pretty regular. There’s still a surprise on people’s faces when they see me – sort of like the double-take that Casper the Friendly Ghost elicited from unsuspecting folks in that cartoon of my youth. I take the looks to mean “Hey, you’re looking well!”

And even if I’m not, I’ll choose to accept the comment and believe I DO look well. I am certainly feeling pretty good and that’s nothing to sneeze at.

We’ve had a great week here. The team of folks here: kitchen, shop, office, delivery, service has done terrific work! You see the pictures of the big event last night. Tonight we have another big off-premises party and an in-house event right here. We’ve scooted all over the area, catering for long and short meetings, long and short workshops, big and small events everywhere. Go team!

Remarkably, most all of this has happened without me. I am not functioning at 100% by any means, needing a lot of rest and a lot of down time. And what an amazing thing that I can do that, can do what I need to do, knowing that things here are in perfect shape. Well, yes, tiny things happen, but everyone is pulling hard and is making it all go so very well.

And I have started inching back in. I have picked up the writing for my book again and am feeling good about feeling well enough to get back into it. Every day my thoughts are filled with my writing and with how to explain some of the parts of the book that need more of a creative writing direction. My bees seem to be doing very well, though their activity level is much more subdued with these chillier temperatures. But all I have to do is look out my window or sit in my driveway and there they are, doing their work, reminding me that we are important partners in this important project – very much of a life-giving one for me. That’s good.

And finally, a cute little note about my cute little dog. She has her own bed but often migrates to mine by morning. I’m happy to snuggle up with her warm weight. This morning, waking up early and listening for her I realized she was tucked in right next to my head, curled up on the other pillow at the top of my bed. No harm, no foul. Just a warm bundle, close enough to give a quick scratch to and share a good morning salute. (Did you know how much I love this dog?)

I hope all is well with you this week. Thanks for all your notes and cards. This week was also a bang-up week because I got TWO cards in the mail featuring a red bicycle. Suh-WEET!

It ain't over till the dishes are done
And then, yes, the cleanup time comes.  This team of servers is very experienced and rocked it out when it came time for cleanup.  Everyone did a great job, kept the food hot and delicious.

And I, feeling so very close to normal, got to go out to the party, take a quick look, give a couple of hugs, and scoot back to work where I got to be delivery girl (everyone else was at the big party) for a group who we're feeding for a whole week.  A perfect thing.
