It's FALL!!! |
|
And without a moment's hesitation Brendan roasted some Brussels Sprouts. These are one of the things he makes that are my favorite. Give 'em a try when you're in the next time (if he's making them...) |

Don't forget the potatoes |
|
Some people brag about their children. I show pictures of our food. Frankly, I don't think there's that much difference. This roasted potato dish is a regular around here. Cheesey and fall-y and yum. |

My market basket |
I've been having an apple a day. I'm not really keeping the doctors away, but I figure an apple a day, or two, can't hurt, right? Today I got some local Macs, some lovely radishes, a box of tomatoes, and - YES! - the next to the last apricot danish. LIFE is GOOD!!!! |

Drumming class Thursday, Oct. 6th |
|
I REALLY need to have someone standing right over my shoulder when I write these newsletters! Last week I wrote about moving the drumming class but I wrote October 7th. NOPE! It is going to be on Thursday, October 6th. 7:30 pm.
Please do come. It is one hour of unabashed fun.
Call Jessie, the teacher, to save a spot: 828-777-5115 is her number. The class costs just $20.00 (payable to her that night). We start at 7:30 - and our cafe is closed so we can make as much noise as we wish. |

A honey of a book |
I've now moved all my book materials to work. My new red containers are full of reference materials, pictures, articles that have been sent to me over the past year or so and the honeys I'm featuring. I've gotten on a bit of a schedule and am sticking with it. Go me!!! |

A word or two from Laurey |

September 24, 2011
Hiya hiya,
Another grand day. Another day of a market morning and a pleasantly busy café and the promise of an afternoon at home with my bees and my dog and a long span of time to think and muse and wonder.
Last night I went to The Arts Space Charter School to participate in a school fundraiser. Our gang here made some Kale and Butternut Squash salad with produce from Aardvark Farms. I had a wonderful helper, Margaret, who was poised and self-assured and lovely. We were a good team, sharing the responsibility and pleasure of describing the dish and the ingredients and the source. She made my night, graciously chatting with me when no one was at our table, and then stepping up to greet guests when they did appear. I haven’t been to anything like this in a while and it did me good to just be there with the food and the garden and the students and their parents.
And then this morning I strolled through the downtown market, determined to stock up on apples. I’ve following my instincts these things and my instincts have been screaming for apples these days. This morning’s visit was a special treat for me too, since I ran into a number of “you look GREAT!” folks. I tell you what, friends, this is such a fun thing for me. I mean, I actually agree with them at the moment, but it REALLY is cool to get to go somewhere (anywhere) and be showered with compliments. I LIKE it! I’ve had a nice break from treatments following my surgery and head back this coming Monday for what I hope will be the final push. Fingers crossed.
This week is special too because we are hosting a Honey tasting here. It is a private event but it is the first time our new Center for Honeybee Research has done this sort of a contest. It’ll be a “black jar” contest, meaning that the color and clarity and such don’t count. My honey is one of the entries. We are SO excited and so nervous! My girls are positively buzzing with the thrill of it all. The winner will be announced in October at another Center event. I’ll be sure to let you know how WE do.
In other news – well, the other news is that things are great here. I work with a wonderful team of folks. We have terrific ingredients from local farms. We get to do our work in a beautiful place and we get to do it the way we want with constant support and encouragement from you. I have the great good fortune to have a team of folks who are helping me get from here to there on this blip of a bump in my road. Life is really good and I am very blessed.
I’ll tell you a story or two next week. |

It's Heather's birthday this week!!! |
My middle sister's (she's the middle one) birthday is this Friday. I've always thought of September 30th as HER day, just as May 14th is MY day and May 18th is my other sister's day. Heather suggests a 30-day "grace period" on either side of her day so don't feel bad if you didn't know or if you miss greeting her this Friday. You still have a solid month to wish her your best and, in her opinion, you will not even be late! |
