Fall fell |
|
You know, the thing about Fall here is that it takes its time to arrive. Sure, the temperatures have been gradually falling for a few weeks. Slowly, slowly, slowly. From one way of looking at things, movement has really stalled. For a few weeks it has seemed, to me at least, like nothing has been happening, like time has been standing still. Leaves in my yard have been falling (I know this because even though I have been blowing my lawn on a weekly basis, more leaves appear...) but the colors have not seemed to change.
I grew up in Vermont, as you know. And in Vermont color in the Fall is a gigantic thing. The hills BLAZE with color. Sugar Maples turn screaming red and vibrant orange and blinding yellow. Here, well, things are not usually like that. When I drive home and come over the rise that reveals a look at the hillsides, I see muted colors: greyish purple, greyish brown, grey.
BUT the difference here is that, if I look closely, there ARE blasts of color, they are just visible in a more, well, individual sense. One tree here, another one there. Not forests full of color, no, but color is here. And, the funny thing is that it comes later and lasts longer. One tree at a time.
Today I went to one of our tailgate markets and was drawn to five or six trees at the edge of the parking lot. Trees that DO have the fiery blasts that I still miss, after all these years of being gone from Vermont. We used to take brilliant leaves and iron them between two pieces of waxed paper, preserving the color for a few days, and scenting the air with a curious burned, chemical-y aroma.
Hmm, maybe I'll collect some and give the ironing a try this afternoon... |

Holy Mazoley!!! |
|
Can you believe this? Barbara, our Tuesday baker, showed up with this freak of nature the other day. Actually, it has a name, though I don't remember what it is - a "Giant Beauty" or some such thing. I've been scared to try it, wondering what kind of genetic trickery could have been exercised to result in this creature. Okay - maybe it was simple and determined grafting that created this thing.
In OTHER news, I have been enjoying an apple a day, thanks to the plethora of sane-sized Rome Beauties and Honeycrisps and Mutsus and Macintoshes that our farmers bring to our local markets. Nothing like 'em, in my mind. Nothing. And if you like 'em sliced and put into a pie, come see what we've got going. We had a crumbly tart the other day. Let's see what I can coax them to make THIS week! |

A Camino Dinner! November 14 |
Many of you have mentioned that you would like to hear more about the trek I undertook earlier this year, the walk across Spain on The Camino de Santiago de Compostela. Well, as it turns out, I would like to share some stories about that walk with YOU! And, as it also turns out, I'd like to share some of the meals I enjoyed there too.
SO, how's this sound?
Come join me to hear stories and share some of my favorite food memories from that adventure. We're planning Thursday, November 14th for this dinner. We'll be having some traditional Spanish starters, a Paella, and some really typical Spanish meal finishers, like Flan and the very special Torta de Santiago, to top it all off. We'll make Sangria and, in between courses, I'll tell you some stories, recount some of the Camino Magic that happened.
I hope you can make it.
(I'll give you more details next week, like the price and such. In the meantime, if you want to make sure to save yourselves spots, give us a shout at 252-1500. It should be around 45 per person...) |

Protection |
|
Do you know about bottle trees? They are a Southern tradition that is supposed to protect the household. My tree is right next to my beehives and I sure do hope it is working. I CAN say that these recent warm days have coaxed my girls to be out and about, patrolling the neighborhood, scouting for those last drops of nourishment before the quiet and dark of the colder months. |

1/12th of a teaspoon |
This is the amount of honey that ONE worker bee makes in her entire working life. A stunner, yes? I wear one of these amulets most days, as it informs my life. A seemingly insignificant amount adds up to so much more. When I feel insignificant i touch my amulet and, most days, it helps me feel a tiny bit better.
My friend Ken is a jeweler and he created this sweet piece. As I write, I am waiting to receive the second shipment from him, as the first order sold out like a flash. We're filling them with my very own "Stoney knob Gold." They'll be here in a week or so and then I'll be happy to help you fill your wish list with one or two or more. Stay tuned. |

A word or two from Laurey |
|
Hello friends. I do hope this early November day is giving you everything you'd like, um, for an early November day, that is. I started my day at the market, filling a bag with crisp apples, a just-baked baguette, and a gallon of apple cider. A perfect trio, in my mind.
A little later I am going to go collect my furry companion and we'll mosey along to The Biltmore Estate where we, or, um, she, can romp around in the leaves and roll in something stinky. Not much will make her happier. As long as it involves me and her and a car and an off-leash walk, she will be thrilled. Her enthusiasm is captivating, spreading and filling me and my heart too.
"A WALK??? REALLY? We're going for a WALK!!!!???"
And so we do, she pulling me along the path at the lake, leaping into the water even though it is November and, to me, way too cold for such things. Harumpf, I've become what I said I'd never be - a grownup who will not go wading if it is too cold. Ah well, Tye keeps me smiling as she hurries into the water, slipping down until she is completely submerged.
These wet visits result in a hose-down when we get home because she collects mud and sticks and dried bits of this and that which end up on the couch or the rugs or, yes, on my bed. (She is my best dog friend and there is nothing off-limits for her.)
And one thing about having Tye in my life is that I pay attention to things I might, under other circumstances, ignore. Before Tye, for instance, I ignored squirrels on trees. Now, thanks to her, I am alert to one that could be a quarter of a mile away. She keeps track of all of them, the ones who have just dashed across the road in front of our car, the ones who are storing acorns in our neighbor's yards, the ones who are trying to avoid her gaze.
She misses none of them, slinking along a stealthy step at a time.
I can feel the pull of this little friend of mine so I think I'll close this out and head home.
I hope you have a good week. I'm looking forward to tomorrow when our gang is going to gather to watch the Chuck's Eat the Street episode that was broadcast on The Cooking Channel this week. It's cute, me and the bees and our staff and the shop and our street. These Cooking Channel shows gets rebroadcast on a regular basis (Sunday at 4, for instance) so try to watch it. I'll put a link to the channel right below here so see if you can find it, okay? Okay! |

Cutie pie, cutie bee |
Isn't this the sweetest little thing? She was dancing outside the window where my sister and brother-in-law were dining last week. That's the cool thing about little ones - they don't care if it is actually Halloween or not. The costumes go on and stay on regardless of the actual date. Fine with me. I'm not a costume wearer but I do like seeing the streets filled with littles sporting their princess or superhero or firefighter togs.
Our Henry wears his fire clothes whenever there is a dress-up occasion and Halloween rarely is a part of the conversation. ANY dress-up event is reason enough for him to don his hat, coat, boots, red-suspendered pants and protective balaclava too. And yes, in case you were wondering, he DID wear the complete outfit on Thursday. Why wouldn't he? |
