Camino Dinner is THIS WEEK!!! (Thursday the 14th) |
|
Hi Hi hi and hola and Buen Camino.
Do join me this coming Thursday (the 14th at 6:30 pm) to share a dinner based on the foods I met along my pilgrimage walk in Northern Spain this past Spring. We're having an assortment of Tapas, Paella Valenciana (even though that is from Southern Spain), a Tarta Santiago (the traditional dessert along the Way) and Flan (which is EVERYWHERE!)
We'll have Sangria (with and without wine) and Gluten Free options of everything on the menu.
I've been thinking of this dinner since I was walking and I look forward to telling you some stories and showing you some photographs from my adventure. I sure do hope you come. The price for all of this is just 49.95. We still have some room so do give us a call if you'd like us to sqve spots for you at our table. 828-252-1500 |

Suh-WEET! |
|
I really AM a creature of the seasons. We had a handful of apple trees at my childhood home. Until we got caught, my sister Heather and I collected pocket change from the Inn's guests by selling them apples that we picked up off the ground. Once our enterprising ways were discovered, my parents put a stop to our lucrative salesmenship. Yes, of course the guests could easily pick up their own apples from the ground under our Golden Apple or MacIntosh trees, not that this occurred to me or Heather. Our parents pointed this out to us, in less than gracious terms.
Ah well.
Living away from my family trees now means that I have to go to a local orchard or to the local market to keep my office and home supplied. Like Proust's Madeleines, these crisp bites yank me back to home. It'slmost as good as being there. |

"Chutney Babes" in the HOUSE!! |
If it's Fall it MUST be time for Chutney.
Rebecca and Michelle got to be my Chutney Associates this past week. We filled the cauldron with almost 100 pounds of Cranberries, oranges, Raisins, spices, apple cider and apple cider vinegar, brought the whole thing to a boil, turned it down to a simmer, stirred it up and then filled almost 300 jars with the fragrant combination.
We're getting ready for Thanksgiving around here and this is going to help you get ready too. Stop by the shop to pick up a few jars for your friends and family. Do like I've been doing every day since making this year's batch and slice some turkey and make a sandwich with chutney, horseradish mayonnaise and wheat bread. (Sure, we can make one for you any day. Ask for the Laurey Turkey Sandwich Special. That will get you in the spirit, my friends. It sure will. |

My bee hat |
If you live around here you will know that I wear this hat almost every day. I really love it. Really. It was given to me at a conference a few years ago from someone who read my newsletter. (If it was you, please let me know, as I'd love to be in touch with you.)
I have to admit that, when I first saw it, I was gracious but didn't really think it was something I would wear. HA! I was sure wrong! It really is a perfect hat for me. It's wool so it keeps my head warm. It has bees on it and that's certainly an appropriate decoration now that I am promoting my Honey Book. And it is just so darn cute that it makes ME feel darn cute too. And there's nothing wrong with that, in my humble opinion.
Speaking of book sharing, I will be at Accent on Books this coming Saturday, November 16th at 11 am. This is a redo of a date I had to cancel (so sorry to all of you who showed up...please do come back.) And I'm going to be at our local Mast General Store, right up Biltmore Avenue from here, in December. As I might have mentioned, the publishers priced my book at the very affordable price of $14.95 so do think about giving one to everyone on your holiday gift list. I'll be delighted to sign them for you. We have plenty in stock here in the cafe so give us your list and I'll sign them and have them ready for you to pick up OR we'll send them.
Just e-mail us (info@laureysyum.com) or call us (828-252-1500) and consider it done.
Thanks! |

A word or two from Laurey |
|
November 9, 2013
Hiya,
I’m one who is happy to have chilly weather when it is supposed to be chilly. Like now. Which means that I am filled with vim and vigor these days, especially because my pup is very convincing when I come home, telling me in no uncertain terms that she would like very much to go for a walk, please. And I am happy to comply. I was able to start exercising again this past week, mostly in the afternoons, also known as Tye Time. Sigh. But this also means that I have been shuffling my schedule to try to make sure she gets what she wants as much as I do. And fortunately, walking fits both of our needs, plus I get the added bonus of a VERY happy dog when the walks happen.
Another fun thing to do is to “rake” the leaves. I DO have a rake but mostly blow the leaves with my handy leaf blower. It is very quick, providing almost instant gratification, and keeps me outside with my pup who is getting better at avoiding the noisy monster that I become once my leaf beast is activated.
I’ve had some nice encounters with assorted people recently, times when I get to share stories of my bees. Bees are front and center for so many people these days that I often find myself speaking to knowledgeable folks, people who have read an article or three or four that tell of the nearly dire circumstances of the lives of our bees these days. I, like many who share their lives with these miraculously interesting creatures, am doing my best to spread the word about what bees do and how we can help them. I am trying.
The other morning was nearly heartbreaking for me, though. As I came out of my house and walked down my front steps I was devastated to find one of my hives knocked down and scattered over the hillside. A bear had come in during the night and had done what bears do and had tried to get some honey. It succeeded in creating a big mess but did not get every drop of honey, nor did it kill every bee. Turns out that bears like baby bees even more than honey. True, at the moment I was too shocked to do anything except get in my car and drive away. But later on I came home and put the disaster site back together, finding frames full of honey and bees. I sang them a little song and told them I was sorry but that I hoped they were okay. My mentor tells me that they might still make it (fingers crossed, everyone.) I am going to buy and install a bear fence later today. I am not wild about the wires that I will have to string in front of my hives, but I also don’t want the bears to attack again. One does what one has to do, I suppose.
And so I am off to the electric fence store. (Sigh.)
And then, to take my pup for a walk. (Yay!)
And then, though I did it yesterday, I’ll consider cranking up the blower to give my lawn another sweep. I have friends coming tomorrow and somehow a clean lawn is something I want to have for them. Similar to a vacuumed rug (which I have to do too!!)
I’d better get going.
I’ll be in touch next week, unless I see you at our Camino Dinner. (Hint.)

With my Spirit Guide |
Monsieur Henri continues to be my hero, my guide, my friend. We gathered last week to watch the "Chuck's Eat the Street" episode. (I'm still trying to figure out how to get a link to a video - so if any of you figure it out, do let me know, okay?)
Our gathering was soon after Halloween so making faces was still in our collective consciousness. Cute, eh? Henry came dressed as a, surprise!, fireman. I spent the day dressed as, um, myself. Someone once told me that one should dress as one would like to be - the following year. I'm always happy to just BE the following year so I always dress as myself. I have pictures of myself as the age of 5 or 6 dressed the same way I still dress. Why mess with a sure thing, I say. Khakis, turtlenecks or t-shirts, sneakers. Reliable and comfortable and, well, just good. Plus it makes it easy to recognize me. AND I don't have to fool with costumes. Smart!!! |
