We're #1! |
|
My bees' honey just won first place in an international honey contest. Best Local honey!!!!
Go bees!
Go Stoney Knob Gold!
(I wish I had enough to sell, but what I managed to collect needs to be saved for the bees in case they need it for overwintering.)
BUT - fear Not! I have been invited to do a honey dinner with Brendan Reusing (who was our chef here before he left to open his own spot) at his restaurant, All Soul's Pizza. He and his partner Dave (from Farm and Sparrow Bakery) are are going to have a honey dinner on Monday, December 16. Almost all of the recipes will be from my Fresh Honey Cookbook AND most of the honey will be from Stoney Knob (now an official Certified Appalachian Grown establishment!!!)
You can reserve your spot (I recommend that you do so soon as there is limited seating) by calling All Soul's at 254-0169. |

More Sweet news |
|
I found out that one of my recipes will be in the Thanksgiving Week issue of People magazine. Say what you will (I love reading People in the checkout line at the grocery store, often choosing the longest line so I have more time to read) they have a circulation of 3.2 MILLION and that, my friends, is a mighty big crowd.
Also, this coming week, on Tuesday morning, WLOS-tv will be here (at 4:30 in the morning!) to film a few segments on Thanksgiving cooking. This means I have to get up at 4 so maybe I'll just stay up all night.
We'll be on the early morning news so either get up early or set your recorder to tape these sessions. I'll be joined, I think, by a couple of local farmers - who are used to getting up early! |

"Chutney Babes" in the HOUSE!! |
If it's Fall it MUST be time for Chutney.
Rebecca and Michelle got to be my Chutney Associates this past week. We filled the cauldron with almost 100 pounds of Cranberries, oranges, Raisins, spices, apple cider and apple cider vinegar, brought the whole thing to a boil, turned it down to a simmer, stirred it up and then filled almost 300 jars with the fragrant combination.
We're getting ready for Thanksgiving around here and this is going to help you get ready too. Stop by the shop to pick up a few jars for your friends and family. Do like I've been doing every day since making this year's batch and slice some turkey and make a sandwich with chutney, horseradish mayonnaise and wheat bread. (Sure, we can make one for you any day. Ask for the Laurey Turkey Sandwich Special. That will get you in the spirit, my friends. It sure will.
We call this Jubilee Chutney because we send a portion of the sale of each jar to The Jubilee Community here in Asheville. They use it to keep people warm in the winter by helping with their heating bills. Nice, yes? |

Visiting the bees - an update |
|
As you know from reading my newsletter, one of my hives got clobbered by a bear recently. My mentor advised me to put the whole scattered mess back together in the hopes that some of the bees might still be hanging round. Sure enough, there were a number of girls in the area and on the frames that were strewn down the hillside. And many of the frames still had honey in them so, fingers crossed, the news, while not ideal, is not necessarily a complete disaster.
Also, for those of you who missed it, the episode with me and Chuck does get re-broadcast a couple of times a month so check out your Cooking Channel listing and see if you can catch it. |

A view along the Camino |
We had a really delicious evening earlier this week for our first Dinner and Conversation about my recent pilgrimage walk on The Camino de Santiago de Compostela. We had a full house of interesting and interested diners. A number of you were not able to make it (there was a big event that same night which conflicted with our dinner) and we also ran out of seats for those who did not have a conflict.
SO - if enough of you express interest, we will do another one. I have also now figured out how to work my computer so there will be projections of photographs. Let me know if you are interested and, if you are, we'll put it back on the calendar. Sound good?
ALSO - please mark your calendars for the 13th of December (which happens to be a Friday...) We're having our annual Comfort and Joy dinner and Conversation that night. My nightingale-voiced sister will be here guiding us in Christmas Carols. We'll post the menu next week. But trust me, if you have trouble with Christmas Spirit, come to this gathering. It will surely get you in the right mood. |

A word or two from Laurey |
|
November 16, 2013
Hello to you. We’re having a chilly, foggy day here but that’s okay with me. My day involves a number of indoor activities which are harder to do when the weather is gorgeous. No such problem today. Tye IS going to get a walk today but she doesn’t care what the weather is, and, truthfully, neither do I. Light rain is good for me, giving me a chance to wear my Camino raincoat which gives me a chance to think about that wonderful walk that I was able to do just 6 months ago. Sheesh – time flies, doesn’t’ it?
I’m getting in the holiday spirit. This year my family will gather at my sister’s house in Kentucky. We had almost established a tradition but my treatment schedule and accompanying exhaustion put a serious damper on all that for the past two years. This year I am thrilled that I am well enough that plans are back on the calendar. My sister’s meal happens on Saturday after Thanksgiving and includes all of her friends who have spent Thursday with their given families. They have all missed my sister’s gathering too so this year feels like it will be a big reunion, not to mention a big celebration. PLUS it means that I will get to enjoy our café as it fills with the aromas of Thanksgiving and then I get to go to my sister’s neighbors for the actual Thanksgiving day gathering. My sisters and I will cook on Friday and then have our family celebration on Friday. Tye is going too so I hope she can help keep me active in the midst of so many tempting meals.
This is the first year that my new brother-in-law will join us and my big sister’s main squeeze will be there for the first time too. Should be really nice. The little kids will join in, making it a multi-generational event. Fun! I like being “Auntie Laurey” or, as it becomes, simply “Auntie.”
Let’s see: There is a lot going on outside and I can hear Tye whimpering for me. “Walk please. “Let’s go for a walk now, please.” So I’m going to go home and let her pull me around the lake.
Oh! Before I forget, I want to spread the word about our breakfasts. I drive around town and see gigantic lines at a number of places. I admit to being IN those lines on occasion. And I admit that other places have good food too. BUT we have GREAT breakfasts and there is rarely a line. Once inside (with no waiting on the sidewalk) you simple place your order at the counter (no waiting for a waiter) take your coffee (no waiting) to your table (no waiting for a hostess) and in a few minutes your made-right-here breakfast – with all local ingredients – will be brought to you. And then, since you have already paid, there is no waiting for your check.
“Best French Toast in town!” I heard the other day.
We have breakfast burritos every day, quiche, fresh fruit, yogurt, great coffee, and scones, muffins, and breakfast sweets that were made just that morning.
Hope to see you soon. And once the word is out, there might be a bit of a wait, though I don’t expect it will be very long.
Okey doke. Time to go for a walk. I’ll be in touch next week.

Sad Tye |
When I am gone too long Tye drags bits of me out her dog door and collects them on the porch. As a "three dog night" indicates a cold one, a "three shoe day" lets me know I am giong to have some apologizing to do. And no, she doesn't restrict her treasures to my shoes. Slippers are the first to go and then sneakers follow. I have found my pajamas out there and once, on a particularly long day, she dragged out some of my underwear.
Sigh. This afternoon we will go for a walk. I promised. Three shoes will prompt that sort of response.
I love my dog. |
