Photo Moments with the 20th Annual BFG Magazine!
Here's Lightnin Malcolm at Blues From The Top in Winter Park, Colorado June 25. This  Mississippi Bluesman is quite the charismatic and energetic guitar slinger who is also blessed with a deep, soulful voice.

Malcolm learned directly from blues masters touring with R.L. Burnside, T Model Ford, Big Jack Johnson, Robert Belfour etc. He developed a unique, funky and hypnotic bass/rhythm/lead simultaneous "full band" guitar sound, as one man band with foot drums or as a power duo with a drummer (notably Cedric Burnside). In 2009 Malcolm won the Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Artist. He's currently on tour with Tab Benoit.

First Annual Bourbon and Blues Festival Aug 20 in Cedar Rapids

(CEDAR RAPIDS, IA) - Cedar Ridge and Linn County Blues Society present the first annual Bourbon and Blues Festival to be held Saturday, August 20 at the McGrath Amphitheatre (475 First Street SW), Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Formerly known as Czech Village Blues, Linn County Blues Society began hosting the event in 2018 to celebrate the blues in our area and raise funds for the organization’s several benefactors, including Eastern Iowa Arts Academy and the Community Health Free Clinic. Cedar Ridge began hosting Bourbon and Blues at its winery and distillery in Swisher in 2010 to celebrate the brand’s release of its first bourbon whiskey.

With the intent of growing to a multi-day event attracting blues enthusiasts throughout the midwest, this year’s line-up has grown to four acts. The female, award-winning blues artists include headliner Shemekia Copeland, Carolyn Wonderland, Danielle Nicole, and Molly Nova and the Hawk featuring Bryce Janey.

Tickets are $35 in advance (plus box office processing fees) and can be purchased through the McGrath box office or via Ticketmaster. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the show for $40 (plus fees) at the gate. Children under the age of 12 are free with a paid adult ticket.

No outside chairs allowed. Chairs are provided by the amphitheater and will be pre-set for general admission seating.
Ground Zero Club’s fantastic New Mural tribute
(CLARKSDALE, MS) – The Ground Zero Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi is home to a new mural, The Bayou, by Jim Vision, a UK mural artist! It’s a tribute to the late Bill Luckett, co-founder of Ground Zero Blues Club.

On his Instagram post the artist’s caption reads, “This part of the mural is a tribute to the Late Great Bill Luckett. A stand-up Southern Gentleman who did so much for his community and was much loved by his family and friends.

Bill built the incredible Blues Club, Ground Zero with his business partner Morgan Freeman and kept the blues alive and kicking in the Mississippi Delta.

There is a great sadness to his passing but also joy for the full life he lived and lives he touched. In this mural the spectres of bluesmen have returned to give Bill a wonderful send off, a "homegoing celebration". Those touched by his great kindness bring sustenance for the journey as Bill's soul is ferried to the afterlife, a joyful place filled with light, laughter and Blues.”

Visit Clarksdale says “Save the date! More murals are coming to Clarksdale October 10-16, 2022 as a part of Paint Clarksdale.”

Popa Chubby :: EMOTIONAL GANGSTER
Every Popa Chubby record is an experience. Emotional Gangster, his latest release is no exception and features him on many instruments plus doing all the mixing and recording duties. Nine of the tracks are written by Popa (aka Ted Horowitz). “This record definitely reflects happier times and good, solid dose of classic Blues,” says Popa.” I specifically included covers like “Hoochie Coochie Man” and Dust my Broom” to show respect for the Fathers. Willie Dixon has always been my idol, you know.”

But the real gems here come in Popa’s original compositions. “Equal Opportunity” is a light hearted singalong that celebrates the feminine at a time when it is seriously needed. And songs like “Flyaway,” and both the French and English version of “Why You Wanna Make War,” are big standouts. There is more than an ample amount of pure guitar bliss on this record, and slide guitar on tracks like “Tonight I’m Gonna Be A Man” add flavor to a savory mix. For an added bonus, harmonica wizard Jason Ricci joins Popa on the blues-rock anthem, “New Way Of Walking” and the swing shuffle, “Save The Best For Last.”

20th Annual Blues Festival Guide
20th Annual Blues Festival Guide Magazine Digital Edition Released on our website
You can not only get a hard copy of the magazine via select festivals, blues societies or by ordering, but our 20th Anniversary digital edition of the Blues Festival Guide has been launched and is available on our website! Click the image at left to read and enjoy all 84 pages. Don't forget to turn on the speaker to hear Tulle Brae singing "Seven Bridges."

Blues music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.

Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of presenting blues to a wider audience, and as you know, offers our weekly, electronic newsletter: Blues Festival E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.

Blues legend Bobby Rush calls our magazine: "The roadmap to everything blues". Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner Victor Wainwright, Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.

Our cover by photographer Marilyn Stringer features the talented Tullie Brae and Calvin Johnson at the 2021 North Atlantic Blues Festival!

You can also order your own hard copy here!
